Centreville (1-2) at South County (2-1)
The Wildcats and Stallions have had opposite results in every game this season. It doesn’t take a Rhodes Scholar to reason that will continue to be the case after this game, too.
Last week, Centreville snapped a then-region-long 10-game losing streak last week to Yorktown, 21-20, on a game-winning two-point conversion quarterback sneak by senior Cam Walter.
The Wildcats gained 10 fewer yards than the Patriots, but used a defensive touchdown by linebacker Tim Pearson and a clinching interception by sophomore Chase Walter to earn the win.
The Stallions, meanwhile, fell by the narrowest of margins at home. South County scored an apparent game-tying touchdown twice — once on a kickoff return that was called back by a late penalty and, again, on a reception by junior Michael Vane. Vane’s 27-yard grab from junior Evan Beal stood, but the ensuing extra point was blocked.
I butchered both ends of that touchdown connection in the Northern Region Recap — apologies.
South County outgained Annandale, 242-223, but could not mount a game-winning drive in the final 10:59. Still, Beal was 5-for-6 for 69 yards with a touchdown in backup duty, filling in after and in-game injury to senior starter Aaron Andrews.
Regardless of the quarterback, the Wildcats need to cover Stallion bubble screens, which they mix in as extended handoffs in their west-coast, pistol offense.
South County, meanwhile, needs to contain Centreville sophomore running back Manny Smith, who rushed 25 times for 145 yards and a touchdown last week. Stallion senior defensive end Anthony Carabali anchors the defensive line.
This is the first all-time meeting between Centreville and South County.
