South County defeated visiting West Potomac, 69-42, on Friday, putting three players in double figures and hitting a season-high 11 three pointers in the process.

Senior guard Paulina Gregorowicz hit three times from beyond the arc on her way to 11 points while freshman forward Simone Antwi scored 17 mostly on offensive rebounds and put-backs.

“We have kind of emphasized shooting the three-point shot this year,” South County Coach Jason Grubb said. “We recognize that we have some good three-point shooters and we practice a lot of three pointers. Our shooters shoot a lot in practice.”

The Stallions did most of their damage in the second quarter when they outscored the Wolverines 21-5 to take a 35-15 lead into half time.

West Potomac played a better second half behind the hot shooting of junior guard Danielle Dorsey, who hit from everywhere on the floor en route to her team-high 21 points. Senior forward Kim Jones also added 11 for the Wolverines.

But it was too little, too late, as South County’s lead too proved much to overcome. The Stallions have much to look forward to as well — South County boasts four sophomores and two freshman on the varsity roster with only three seniors.

“A lot of people want to say, ‘Next year you are gonna be tough’, ” Grubb said. “But I think we have improved a lot this year. It has taken a while for us to get going, but we are starting to get healthy and we are starting to get the experience. We are pretty tough when we get all of our kids back.”

Perhaps even more impressive, the plethora of young talent on the Stallions’ varsity squad hasn’t left their freshman or junior varsity short handed either.  South County’s freshman team is undefeated and its JV team has only one loss on the season.
