Two pitchers’ duels Saturday afternoon at Westfield High were, ultimately, decided by two pitchers.
Only, both were in the batters’ box when they blew the lid off their respective Virginia AAA state semifinal games.
Loudoun Valley senior pitcher Caroline Williams got it started in the first game, blasting an RBI single to deep centerfield in the sixth inning that scored what proved the game-winning run in a 2-0 victory over South County (27-2 overall).
Great Bridge senior pitcher Kaitlynn Szczepanski followed in the second of the night’s doubleheader with an even more dramatic, two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Wildcats to a 2-0 win past Prince George (21-5) and into the season finale.
As a result, Loudoun Valley (24-4) will face Great Bridge (23-3) at 4 p.m. Sunday at Westfield in the championship game. The Vikings last won state titles in 2003 and 2005, but
both were in Class AA. The Wildcats claimed their previous three
Class AAA titles in 1989, 1999 and 2000.
“State championships are special, no matter what,” Loudoun Valley Coach Joe Spicer said. “I never thought I’d get to one. I tell everybody, it’s the greatest thing you can do in coaching. They’re all special, and every one is a dog fight to get there.”
With a wink and a smile, Spicer added: “But they’re all great. I highly recommend them.”
What was so compelling about the Vikings’ semifinal victory was that South County standout junior pitcher Chelsey Dunham was trying to intentionally walk Williams, Loudoun Valley’s clean-up batter, to load the bases with one out when she produced the game-changing hit.
“Absolutely we were,” Stallion Coach Al Thompson said. “We talked about it before we got there that if she got up with runners on and a free base we’d put her on. I don’t know what happened, but it doesn’t matter. The girl got a hit and we lost the game, and that’s part of it.”
Added Spicer: “I started to steal to move my runner out of the 1-3 situation, but after they threw that first pitch I thought they were trying to intentionally walk her. So I thought I’d let my runners stay and let it happen. But I guess she left the ball a little bit over the plate, and Caroline just kind of flicked her wrist at it.
“These games, it doesn’t take much one way or the other.”
The Vikings added a second, insurance run later that same inning when sophomore designated player Jamie Crisp picked up an RBI when she reached on a error, scoring senior left fielder Haiely Tretick. Tretick had also reached on an error, as both Williams and Dunham yielded only four hits a piece in the game.
“It had to end sometime,” Thompson said. “It would have been nice to have it end tomorrow, but it had to end sometime. To get into the state tournament was exciting. To get to the second round was unbelievable.
“And if we’d have played tomorrow, I don’t know what I would have done. And we had a shot, it just wasn’t meant to be.”
Just like South County, Prince George’s softball team was its first in school history — in any sport — to play in a state semifinal game.
But the Royals suffered a similar fate as the Stallions when Great Bridge senior right fielder Jaclyn Paulk beat out a bunt single to lead off bottom of the seventh inning. When Szczepanski stepped to the plate she said she expected Wildcats’ Coach Kirk Clayton to give her the bunt sign.
He did not.
“He told me he’d give me one swing,” Szczepanski said. “Well, he told me that after the fact. But he did … and it was perfect.”
On her first swing she connected, shooting the ball over the left field fence for the first walk-off home run of her career.
“As soon as I hit it I knew I had hit it hard,” Szczepanski said. “I was just hoping it would stay fair because I knew I had pulled it. But as soon as it went over the fence I just went ballistic. It was crazy.”
Said Prince George Coach Pat Waguespack: “I guess she’s been one of their main hitters all year and I kind of thought she was going to bunt. But I guess they gave her a swing, and it certainly was a big one for ’em.
“It was certainly a let down to see it go out.”
That’s because both Szcezpanski (13 strikeouts) and Royal junior pitcher Lauren Vinson (nine) had been nearly untouchable all game.
And though the disappointment set in, so, too, did the pride in his team’s accomplishments this season.
“I think it does mean a whole lot to our program, and we’re certainly proud of them,” Waguespack said. “We were right there. Just didn’t quite have enough.”

Clutch two-out RBI hits by South County junior catcher Michelle Boynton and sophomore right fielder Julia Kastner propelled South County to a 2-1 victory over Atlee in a Virginia AAA state quarterfinal on Tuesday, the first ever state tournament victory for a South County team.
“It’s a big deal, taking their first win in the state tournament,” South County Head Coach Al Thompson said. “No one’s ever done that here at South County. It’s the first time anyone’s advanced.”
The visiting Raiders got on the board first when first baseman Randi Farrar hit an RBI double in the fourth inning that scored second baseman Amanda Warley, who reached base after being hit by a pitch two batters before.
Atlee catcher Mackenzie Keyes followed up Farrar’s scoring double with a single of her own, but South County junior pitcher Chelsey Dunham kept her composure and worked her way out of the jam.
“We’re were so excited,” said Dunham, who totaled seven strikeouts. “It was our goal to win … and we did.” We’re used to being down and coming back. It’s kind of our specialty.”
Indeed, the Stallions rallied in the bottom half of the fifth inning. With two outs, South County looked dead in its tracks. But that was before junior centerfielder Karly Thompson battled at the plate, eventually reaching via a single.
Then Boynton — with a single swing — changed the whole feel of the game.
She blasted an RBI double that gave the Stallions a breath of fresh air. Kastner then sealed with deal with an RBI single of her own.
“You just have to put yourself into position,” Boynton said of her clutch play. “I’ve been in that position before. Last year, we were at districts and [got] the game-winner right there. You just have to do what you have to do … you can’t be nervous.”
Added Kastern: “When you’re tied, you have to get up there and not focus on hitting the ball far or long. [You] just have to get your bat on the ball and hope you get on base and score that run in.”
Dunham then did a fantastic job of keeping the lead for South County. In the inning following the Stallions’ breakthrough, Dunham faced the heart of Atlee’s lineup — Warley, pitcher Jackie Jenkins, and Farrar — and promptly retired the side. Dunham finished off the Raiders for good in the top of the seventh inning by striking out right fielder Elizabeth Holte to seal the victory.
“These kids will never quit,” Thompson said. “Chelsey won’t let them.”
With the victory, South County advances to face Loudoun Valley at 4 p.m. Friday at Westfield for a spot in the state championship game the following day.
“We’re just going to keep our same mojo going,” Thompson said.

No. 10 –– Horsepower
Northern Region, Virginia
— With its 3-1 win over Centreville on Saturday, South County won the school’s first-ever Northern Region softball championship. Stallion junior pitcher Chelsea Dunham punched out eight Wildcats and senior Meaghan Hunt had all three South County RBI, including a solo home run in the fourth inning.
No. 9 –– Not in Kansas Anymore
Northern Region, Virginia
— Robinson senior George “Toto” Vanegas scored the only goal in his club’s 1-0 win over Jefferson in the Northern Region semifinals on Wednesday. Vanegas — who his uncle nicknamed “Toto” after Italian soccer legend Salvatore Schillaci — took an exquisite first touch before slamming the ball into the net from 18 yards away with his weak foot in the 52nd minute.
No. 8 — Fox Goal (33′) Shanosky Game-Winner (90′)
Loudoun County, Virginia
— In its fourth match with Broad Run this season, Potomac Falls gets its third win, 2-1, with a final-minute, overtime goal by midfielder Conor Shanosky. Dulles District Player of the Year Asa Fox initially put the Panthers on the board with a smooth split of two Spartan defenders and a finish in the 33rd minute.
No. 7 –– King Leads Soccer Queens
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Broad Run has outscored its opponents 77-4 this season and is 44-0-1 since a state semifinal loss in 2007. Spartan senior Holly King, who already had scored twice in Broad Run’s 3-0 win over Heritage in the Region II finals, flicked on this throw-in by senior Valerie Powell and onto senior Kelly Evans for the game-sealing third goal. Spartan senior Caitlin Hunter extended her VHSL record for career shutouts to 60 in the victory.
No. 6 –– Different King Same Swing
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Potomac Falls junior Kevin King floats a precise shot into the far corner — one of the Panthers’ seven goals in their Region II quarterfinal match. Potomac Falls smacked Orange County, 7-0, for its eighth-straight win. King had two goals and Fox had a hat trick.
No. 5 –– WonderWahl
Northern Region, Virginia
— West Springfield’s offense had been paralyzed in the Northern Region quarterfinal on Monday, as Robinson had limited it to one hit through five innings. But the Spartans — who have not lost in the state of Virginia this season — erupted for six runs in the fifth inning. With the score tied, 3-3, and a relief pitcher throwing his first pitch, West Springfield junior Bobby Wahl crushed the game-winning, three-run home run into rightfield.
No. 4 –– Born to Broad Run
Loudoun County, Virginia
— The Spartans won their fourth consecutive Region II softball title, 2-0, over the Orange on Saturday. Broad Run scored both of its runs on nifty slides by junior Jenn Soroka — on a single by junior Anna Blessing — and by senior Megan Waterman — on a groundout by sophomore Maggie Betz.
No. 3 –– Ferrick No-No
Northern Region, Virginia
— In the Northern Region softball semifinals, Centreville senior Jessica Ferrick threw a no-hitter and was one walk away from a perfect game in a 4-0 win over Robinson. Ferrick struck out 12 batters as the Wildcats advanced to the regional championship.
No. 2 –– Reategui Goes Postal
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Broad Run junior Danny Reategui scored the only goal in his team’s 1-0 win over Sherando in the Region II quarterfinals on Memorial Day. Reatugui split two Warrior defenders and kissed his shot off both posts just after halftime.
No. 1 — Summer of Sam
Northern Region, Virginia
— Robinson had taken the lead seven minutes prior in the Northern Region boys’ soccer championship against Westfield, when junior goalkeeper Samir Badr lined up for this free kick 68 yards from goal in the 57th minute. Badr played a long ball into the mixer 10 yards in front of the Bulldog net and it one-hopped through untouched. The ball bounced into the back of the goal for a 68-yard goal and what proved the back-breaking blow in the Rams’ 3-0 regional title win.
