First Half         Second Half

Due to audio difficulties, post-game interviews are unavailable

The Spartan red-zone offense and cover-two were its saving graces against the Stallions in the Patriot District semifinals.

The teams may not have been playing football, but the final score felt like it came from the gridiron.

West Springfield leaned on 8-for-8 free-throw shooting after halftime to defeat South County, 35-25, on Wednesday night to advance to the district championship game.

“At first, I didn’t know [if it would be enough points],” said Spartan freshman April Robinson, who hit all six of her free-throw attempts en route to a game-high 16 points. “At the one end, our offense wasn’t on, which hurt us. But we hung on defensively — which limited their points — and we ended up with the victory.”

Added West Springfield coach Bill Gibson: “You do what you have to do to go to the next round. That’s all that matters right now.”

Both teams had that mentality, especially in the first half.

Tedious, calculated offensive sets early resulted in nine total second-quarter points and a 13-10 halftime lead for the Spartans.

With possessions so valued and the teams running three-man weaves looking for a seam or an open post player down low, shot attempts against the stout defenses were few and far between.

“They did some things to our offense to slow us down and cause some problems,” Gibson said. “But our defense, we came back and did what we had to do to score more than we gave up.”

Added Spartan senior Pui Sham: “Gibson just told us to execute our plays. Normally, most of our points come from transition, so we really just focused on defense.

“From defense, we get that energy, and then we get our fast breaks and just start rolling back in again.”

Those rolls had their genesis in a pivotal third-quarter momentum swing.

Stallion sophomore Alex Brown hit a go-ahead 3-pointer to give South County a 19-16 with under 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

But Sham responded on the ensuing West Springfield possession, connecting on a 3-pointer from the top of the key to tie the score.

The next two Stallion possessions ended on turnovers and the Spartans ended the game on a 19-6 run.

West Springfield advances to face No. 8 T.C. Williams in the Patriot District championship on Friday.

The Spartans lost to the Titans twice in the regular season, by three points on the road on January 9 and by four at home in overtime on February 3.

“They are a really good rebounding team,” said Sham, held to a season-low three points in each of the Titan losses. “We have to focus on boxing out, staying physical with them, and just keep our heads.”

Added Robinson: “We’re going to have to come in mentally ready to play. We’re going to have to execute everything, play great defense and go from there.”

A six-goal offensive barrage in the third period helped the South-Central All Stars outlast the North-West All Stars, 7-5, at the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League All Star game on Wednesday night at the Ashburn Ice House in a showcase of the top talent from around Northern Virginia. Woodbridge’s Seve Cordova was named the most valuable player for South-Central, scoring two of his squad’s six goals in the final period.

The South-Central All-Stars faced a 3-0 deficit after the first period and were down 4-1 at the end of the second. It was in that second period, however, that South-Central coach Jim Fullem saw the complexion of the game start to change.

“You could kind of see the momentum shift,” he said. “We just kept the pressure on them. I think that we surprised them a little bit. Once you start getting the puck to the net, they are going to start going in.”

All four of South-Central’s lines scored in the third, with Bishop O’Connell’s Nicholas Guerere, Battlefield/Brentsville’s Casey Dunn, Paul VI’s Adam Kosna and Forest Park’s Alex Clark all adding to Cordova’s two goals.

“You **** to keep giving cliches, but it was just absolute total team effort,” said Fullem, who coaches Forest Park. “Everybody chipped in. It was really nice to see. That’s what these things are all about.”

Langley’s Brett Hatfield was named the MVP of the North-West team, allowing only one goal in the second period with 14 saves.

The NVSHL playoffs begin on Friday, with No. 12 Broad Run taking on No. 5 Chantilly, No. 9 Briar Woods going against No. 8 Madison, No. 10 Westfield playing No. 7 Langley and No. 11 Paul VI taking on No. 6 Woodbridge. Top-ranked Stone Bridge, No. 2 Herndon, No. 3 Forest Park and No. 4 Bishop O’Connell all have byes in the first round.
