Boys’ Lacrosse: Lake Braddock 9, South County 5

By Greg Young
Annandale High School Student, DigitalSports Intern

When South County junior Travis Lahr scored against Lake Braddock with 5 minutes, 54 seconds left in the second quarter on Monday, it looked like the Stallions had all the momentum. The host team had just re-taken the lead on Senior Night, and were stifling the Bruins’ offensive attack.

But that changed in the second half. The Bruins defense clamped down, and South County’s next goal did not come until just 2:48 remained in the fourth quarter. And by then, Lake Braddock had scored seven unanswered goals in what ultimately proved to be a 9-5 victory for the visitors.

“We shot a lot better in the second half,” Bruins’ Coach Steve Price said.

In what may have been a statement game for Lake Braddock, which won its final five regular-season district games, sophomore middle Keon Robinson may have made the biggest statement of all in the fourth quarter. With his team holding a commanding, 9-3 lead with 4 minutes remaining, Robinson carried the ball through the midfield line and leveled one South County defender and then took on two more before finally losing the ball.

“That hit was brutal,” said Lake Braddock senior captain Woody Kidd, who accounted for four Bruins’ goals. “It dropped their morale a lot.”

For Lake Braddock, the win clinched them the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Patriot District tournament which begins with a home match-up against West Potomac on Thursday. The Bruins defeated the Wolverines in their regular season match-up, 9-4.

“We are going to have to play them tough,” Price said. “We can’t look beyond anybody.”

South County was led by Lahr and Brian Bayliss, who scored two goals each. The Stallions, the No. 3 seed in the Patriot District tournament, will host T.C. Williams on Thursday. The Stallions defeated the Titans, 16-7, during the regular season.

Velocity Featured Athlete of the Week — April 28

By Angela Watts

one-on-one conversation with the Velocity Featured Athlete of the Week, found in a video
player just below the story.

Herndon senior pitcher Katie Briggs earned Velocity’s Featured Athlete of the Week honors after leading the Hornets to a 1-0 victory over visiting Robinson in eight innings on Thursday.

Not only did Briggs throw an excellent game — striking out 13 Rams’ batters in the game, including striking out the side in the second inning and fanning two batters in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings — she was provided the game-winning hit.

Locked in a scoreless tie in the bottom half of the eighth inning, Briggs took an outside pitch to deep right field to score senior second baseman
Chelsea Roseberry for a 1-0, walk-off
victory. Roseberry had reached on a single in the game’s first
additional inning and moved to second when senior center fielder Marra Hvozdovic drew a walk.

With the victory Herndon improved to 10-3 overall on the season with six regular-season games remaining.

Baseball: No. 2 Lake Braddock 11, No. 5 South County 8

By Phil Murphy
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

**Check below the story for video highlights to re-live Friday’s game in 9 min, 59 sec. Interviews are added.*

In the third game in as many days for both South County and host Lake Braddock, the early-inning pitchers’ duel was all but forgotten by game’s end.

The Bruins’ nine-run, 13-batter, 51-pitch third inning was countered by the Stallions six-run, three-home-run, 37-pitch fifth in Friday night’s Patriot shootout.

But, it was Lake Braddock that prevailed, 11-8, to win its eighth straight and move a game ahead of South County and West Springfield with five district games remaining.

“Really, you have three games in three days. We’re lucky that we have enough arms and we’re able to get through some games,” said Bruin coach Jody Rutherford, who boasts a Northern Region-best 77-20 record in the last four years. “We’re very confident. [The win] means something now, but in the long run you want to be playing well at the end of the year.”

Through two-and-a-half innings, starting pitchers Brenden Daley (Lake Braddock) and Brennan Miller (South County) had allowed two collective hits, while recording six strikeouts. With the Bruins nine hitter, freshman Kenny Towns, leading off the bottom of the third, that trend was expected to continue.

But 10 of the next 11 batters reached base, and Lake Braddock batted around to lead 9-0 by the time its diamond destruction was complete.

The inning was highlighted by senior Jordan Tiamson‘s two-run double and Towns’ RBI double in his second plate appearance. Every runner scored at least once in the inning except for sophomore Ryan Lindemuth (3-4, 2 RBI), who was forced out at second after an RBI single.

“It all comes down to getting your foot down early and trusting your hands,” said Lindemuth, whose Bruins have averaged 15.2 runs in the last five games. “The approach the last couple games has been to go the opposite way, and that’s been working for us.”

However, the Bruins’ near-mercy-rule win quickly devolved into a near-miracle, Stallion comeback. South County senior Jesse Beal hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, prompting Daley to be pulled three pitches in the fifth for Lindemuth, whose older brother Steven is Lake Braddock’s starting catcher.

South County (10-5, 8-2 Patriot) gave the younger Lindemuth, Lake Braddock’s most productive hitter on Friday, a taste of his own medicine. The Stallions drew two walks in the fifth inning and had four hits – three of which were home runs.

Junior Seth Jordan made the biggest splash with a first-pitch grand slam down the left-field line that nearly reached Burke Lake Road, cutting the Bruin lead to 10-8.

“They hit the ball tremendously well,” Lake Braddock left fielder Shannon Mark said. “They’re a great hitting team. It was hard to deal with it, but we got through it, got the outs.”

Lindemuth had his hand on four of those six final outs. The sophomore right-hander locked in over the last two innings, allowing just one base runner to preserve the pivotal Patriot victory. He had four strikeouts in three innings of relief to earn the save.

“We’ve had three straight games and he was fresh,” Rutherford said. “I was confident in him. He pitched in bigger situations that this, last year as a freshman, and he was successful. He wasn’t really making bad pitches. They were just hitting.”

Added Lindemuth: “Coach Rutherford told me he had confidence in me and it just comes down to hitting spots at the end of the day.”

Lake Braddock (11-3, 9-1) looks to run its winning streak to nine games on Tuesday versus Annandale, who it beat, 10-3, on April 8. South County hopes to rebound, keeping pace with the district leaders – and run its winning streak against teams not named “Lake Braddock” to seven – at Lee.

The Stallions defeated the Lancers, 13-2, on April 8.

“Braddock is such a good baseball team, so well coached,” said South County coach Mark Luther, who has won the Patriot District championship in both seasons of the school’s existence. “They’re in the driver’s seat at this point. They have a one game lead, beating us twice. So they’re in a pretty good position, now that they’ve cleared out West Springfield and us.

“Numbers one and two in the Patriot get a bye, so now it’s a battle for second place.”

VHSL Announces New Redistricting Plan for Northern Region

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Two current members of the Northern Region — and two who would like to be — plead their cases before the Virginia High School League’s Redistricting and Reclassification committee Monday in Charlottesville.

But only the two current Northern Region schools — Hayfield and Stone Bridge — won the initial battle.

Hayfield, which is currently a member of the Patriot District, appealed its
continued placement there and requested to be moved to the National
District. And Stone Bridge, which currently a member of the Liberty District, appealed its
proposed move to the Cedar Run District in the Northwest Region and
requested to remain a member of the Liberty District.

Both requests were granted.

That was not the case for Heritage (AA Dulles District) and Loudoun Valley (AAA Cedar Run) of
Loudoun County, which appealed their proposed placement into the Cedar Run
District and, instead, requested to join the Northern Region. Heritage
asked to join as a member of the Liberty District; Loudoun Valley as a
member of the Concorde District.

Both of those requests were denied.

The only other change to the current alignment is Fairfax, which had previously been
moved out of the Concorde District, where it currently plays, and into the Liberty District.

A school still has one last opportunity to appeal the decisions that were made on Monday. It may appeal the R&R committee’s decision to the VHSL’s Executive Committee. No hearing will be held, but the Executive Committee will review the written record of the original appeal and issue its decision. The Executive Committe will meet May 7, and the final plan will go into effect July 1, 2009.

As it stands today, the most recent proposal for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years is as follows:

Concorde District
Centreville (2283)
Chantilly (2835)
Herndon (2190)

Girls’ Lacrosse: Annandale 12, South County 7

By Angela Watts

**Video highlights below**

On Tuesday, the night before the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech tragedy, the Annandale girls’ lacrosse team took time before its game against South County to honor one of its own.

Mary Karen Read, a 2006 graduate of Annandale, was one of the 32 victims of last April’s shootings on the Blacksburg campus. Reed, a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society and the Tri-M Band Honor Society in addition to being enrolled in the school’s International Baccalaureate Program, played lacrosse for the Atoms for two years before stopping to focus on her studies.

The team plans to honor Reed again at its home game against T.C. Williams on Thursday, and there will be a moment of silence across the entire Commonwealth at noon today followed by a tolling of bells.

“Mary played JV for us for two years, but because she was in the IB program, time-wise, she wasn’t able to commit to us full-time,” Atoms’ Coach Cindy Hook said. “But she still came out when she could and worked with the JV girls to help them learn. She was a big part of our program and I knew her very well.

“She was so awesome. She was involved in so many things and she truly loved people, loved helping people. She was all about smiling and noticing when someone was having a bad day and going over and making sure she made that day better with a smile and a couple of kinds words. Even if people didn’t know her name, they all knew who she was. She was the one who was always smiling.

“And tomorrow is another day just for us to reflect and remember, but we try to honor her everyday with our positive play. And I think it’s made all of us hopefully pay attention to each other more to try and keep Mary’s spirit alive.”

So this season, in her honor, the Atoms, who have named their biggest end-of-season award after Reed, have placed a renewed emphasis on having fun. And the results have been evident.

Annandale improved its stellar record Tuesday night with a 13-7 victory over South County. The Atoms (10-2) have lost twice to O’Connell High School, but are a perfect 5-0 in Patriot District play with only two regular-season games remaining.

“Everyone hustles their **** off in practice, we work hard but we have fun,” said Atoms’ junior defender Amy Stevens. “We have a new team motto, ‘Teamwork done right.’ And everyone has realized that the more we focus on that, the more we’ll come together and really be successful. And from our first game to now, that’s what you see. We’re working as a team, having fun … and looking good.”

The Atoms led the Stallions by a slim, 5-4 margin at half time before exploding to score two goals in the first 2 minutes, 37 seconds of the second half. Sophomore attack Maggie Craig and junior midfielder Meredith Rutherford provided those fireworks to break the game open.

In all, eight different Annandale players scored against South County, led by sophomore midfielder Madeleine Irwin with three goals and Craig and junior midfielder Annie Weiser added two goals a piece.

South County (7-2), which kept pace early before being overpowered by the Atoms’ stout defense and a high-pressure offense that has knotted 10 goals for more in all but one of its games this season, was led by junior midfielder Caris Moses (two goals) and sophomore midfielder Megan Wears (one).

“This team has really played well together,” Hook said. “They’ve got good athletic talent, but they’ve got great desire to play well together. They know that the way for them to have the most fun is to share the responsibility on attack, in the midfield and on defense. And so we’ve worked really hard with everybody playing their role

“They continue to amaze me. Every time they play better together, their timing is better and they come up with new, creative ways to score. It’s been fun just watching them.”
