Chantilly 7, South County 2

When Chantilly first-team All-Region catcher Keith Morrisroe was called back to the batters’ box after an apparent hit by pitch against South County, he could not have been happier.

Well, at least, not after the next pitch.

Morrisroe stroked a triple into the gap – plating senior Max Langford – one pitch after the home-plate umpire ruled that Morrisroe leaned into the inside pitch that clipped his elbow.

The extra-base hit was part of nine-hit surge in the final three
innings for the Chargers, who powered by the Stallions, 7-2, in the
second game at Robinson High on Memorial Day.

“I know I leaned into it, but I just started sprinting to first,” said
Morrisroe, whose aptitude for making contact far surpasses his acting
ability. “I heard all the opposing parents cheering, so I knew they
were going to call me back. I got all curve balls every other pitch. A
fastball came and I hit it the other way.

“I told the umpire thanks afterwards for that.”

Through three innings, though, it appeared as if the latter half of
Monday’s doubleheader would be a repeat of the early-afternoon
defensive showcase between Robinson and West Springfield.

South County led Concorde District champion Chantilly, 1-0, and the Chargers were a combined 2-for-12 at the plate.

“We didn’t know a whole lot about them,” said Stallion Coach Mark Luther,
who led South County to the Patriot District title in the school’s first two seasons of
existence. “We had never really seen them. We knew they put balls in
play. But just watching them on video on [Digital Sports] and
listening to people, we knew they put the bat on the baseball and you
have to make plays.

“They were getting used to Peyton [Bartlett] … He
certainly does a great job, mixes his pitches pretty well. But once you
get through him one time, he’s certainly hittable when he’s not hitting
his spots. But they’re a good hitting team, they put balls in play. And
that’s a big part of high-school baseball, not getting punched out.”

Added Charger Coach Kevin Ford: “A couple of the guys were a
little too anxious. We still can’t get them relax and just play. That’s
kind of what we’ve been preaching. Each game that we move onto here, if
we just play our game, we’ll be okay.”

And when the Chantilly bats came out of hibernation, its pitching stayed locked in.

Starter Jordan Johnson and reliever Chris Yates pitched
all seven innings, combining to allow two earned runs on seven hits,
while striking out six Stallions. Yates accounted for five strikeouts
in his three innings of work.

“I was hoping we were going to swing the bat and I was hoping we’d get
a good outing on the mound by both of our guys,” Ford said. “We’ve gone
here at the end of year with starting Jordan and then going to Chris. Jordan has pitched in very few games here lately and we got pretty
much what we wanted out of him. He gave up a run and gave us four
innings and we were able to go to Chris.”

With the Patriot District three-seed out of the way, Chantilly advances
to the Regional semifinals where it will play Patriot runner-up West Springfield.

The game – scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Yorktown – will feature All-Region pitchers Mike Kent (Spartans) and Pat Somers (Chargers) with a berth in the Virginia AAA state tournament at stake.

“[That game] is probably going to be lower scoring than this,” Ford
said. “I’ve heard a lot of things about that kid. I haven’t seen him
pitch, but I don’t think you really need to from what people say.

“We’re just going to have to come out and execute. There were one or
two times tonight we didn’t execute. Against a really good pitcher like
that, you are going to have to.”

Playoff Softball: Northern Region Quarterfinals

By Angela Watts

** Look below the story to find four separate video players filled with dozens of video highlights and interviews from all four Northern Region softball quarterfinal games.

Two things became quite apparent by the end of the Northern Region softball quarterfinal quadruple-header held at Falls Church High on a wonderfully hot — and long — Memorial Day.

The first is that Robinson, the defending regional champions, will not go down without a fight.

The second is that, this year, there is no tournament favorite. Each of Monday’s four winners — Herndon, Langley, Westfield and Robinson — showed flashes of brilliance in their quarterfinal victories.

And each, too, showed vulnerabilities.

Robinson, in Monday’s nightcap, watched a five-run lead evaporate into a two-run deficit in the top half of the sixth inning against Stone Bridge.

But the Rams didn’t stay down for long. Robinson rallied for three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to secure an 8-7 victory.

Rams’ senior pitcher Erin Henning, one of only a handful of returning starters from last year’s title-winning team, recovered nicely from a rough sixth inning in which the Bulldogs sent 13 batters to the plate and totaled seven runs on eight hits after only registering one hit in the previous five innings.

Henning blasted an RBI double to left field in the bottom half of the inning to score the game-tying run, and three batters later senior catcher Alex Powers singled in the game-winner.

Henning then went back to the pitching circle and promptly retired the last three Bulldog batters in order.

“We have to prove to everyone that we’re not an easy team to beat,” Henning said. “Earlier in the season they had kind of written us off because we started out rough, but we’ve really come back really hard and I think we’re playing to what we really are capable of.”

Robinson’s victory was the third one-run contest of the day, as Herndon defeated South County, 1-0, in the day’s opener and Langley defeated Centreville, 7-6 in eight innings, in the second game. The third contest was almost as tight — and certainly every bit as exciting — with Westfield besting McLean, 3-1.

Herndon senior pitcher Katie Rynex, who recently returned to play from a broken right ankle, led the Hornets both offensively and defensively. Rynex totaled 12 strikeouts against the Stallions, and also earned the game’s lone RBI on a double down the left-field line in the first inning that scored senior Marra Hvozdovic, who reached on a leadoff single back to the South County pitcher.

“They both actually feel great,” Rynex said of the RBI and her 12 strikeouts. “But pitching is my love, so doing that … I loved it.”

Langley got two runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to knot the score with Centreville at 6 and force an extra inning. There, it was senior centerfielder Lindsay Brown, who reached on a leadoff walk, who scored the game-winner on a Wildcat throwing error. Brown also opened the game’s scoring with a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the second inning.

“With 10 seniors on the team we were like, this could be one of the last games playing together, so we put all our effort in,” Brown said of going to extra innings. “And luckily we came out with the win. … Getting it in any way, that’s great.”

Westfield, which used three different pitchers to keep McLean off-balance at the plate, plated a single run in each of the first, third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. But the Highlanders kept fighting, and sat in a bases-loaded, two-out situation with senior catcher Alaura Maglio at the plate.

But when Westfield freshman pitcher Jackie Martinez got low and the ball escaped senior catcher Elizabeth Jones, it looked as if McLean would cut the lead to one run. Instead, Jones flew to the backstop to retrieve the passed ball and fired it to Martinez, who made the tag at home for the game’s final out.

“I was thinking that I should have stopped the ball, that I shouldn’t have let it go,” Jones said. “And then when I was chasing after it, I thought that [the runner] definitely had the base at home. But then I threw it and saw that she wasn’t there … Once [Jackie] got it, I was really excited.”

On Wednesday night at South County in the semifinal round, Herndon and Langley will meet at 5 p.m. followed by Westfield and Robinson at 7 p.m.. The two winners will not only advance to Friday’s regional title game at 6:30 p.m. at Yorktown, but will also earn automatic berths into the upcoming Virginia AAA state tournament.

Northern Region Softball: South County 1, Madison 0 (F/12)

By Greg Young
Annandale High School Senior, DigitalSports Intern

Within the South County and Madison softball game, two unique styles of pitching were put on full display.

For the Stallions, sophomore Chelsey Dunham’s dominated hitters, only allowing three hits and two walks in the game. On the other side for Madison, senior Kacie Goddard wasn’t quite as dominant but was equally effective, making clutch pitches when she needed to, allowing 16 hits but escaping 2 bases-loaded jams.

With such efficiency from the pitching circle, the game kept going. And going.

Seven innings wasn’t enough to separate the two teams in this Northern Region first-round game. Neither was eight or nine or 10, for that matter. As the extra innings passed, still locked in a scoreless tie, even tthe South County scoreboard became so filled with zero’s that it had to be reset.

“I just had to keep my energy up,” Dunham said. “I just kept moving as fast as I could.”

But finally, in the bottom of the 12th inning, South County was able to end the game on its own terms. With runners on first and second base, sophomore Michelle Boynton singled in the game-winning run, ending an exciting game between the two softball powerhouses.

“I had to keep confidence up in my swings,” said Boynton, who finished 2-for-4 with two walks.

Boynton also had the game-winning hit in South County’s win over West Springfield in the Patriot District championship game.

Dunham’s role against Madison wasn’t only to pitch. Not only did
she eventually enter the game as a hitter and go 3-for-3, she also led
the South County cheering during the game.

“She’s a motivated, self-starting pitcher,” South County Coach Al Thompson said. “Because of her work ethic, she can go on forever.”

The Stallions now advance to face Herndon, which defeated Mount Vernon, 13-0, in its first-round game. The Hornets are 15-8 on the season. For South County, the win meant more than just advancing to the regional quarterfinals. It also, the Stallions hope, earned respect for Patriot District softball.

“It is a little frustrating because the Patriot District gets no respect,” Thompson said. “These girls have worked since February. To them, it didn’t matter what inning it was.”

Northern Region Baseball: South County 12, Madison 8

By Jimmy Thomas

Check below the story for complete highlights of Fridays playoff game

South County rallied to defeat host Madison, 12-8, on Friday and advance to the quarterfinal round of the Northern Region tournament where it will square off against Chantilly on Memorial Day.

The Stallions jumped to a quick lead on a sacrifice fly by senior Jesse Beal that scored senior lead-off hitter Brent Frazier in the top half of the first inning.

The lead, however, proved short-lived as Warhawk junior first baseman Alex Jacquez singled and then scored on a two-run homer by Andrew Schrock. Madison added three more run in the inning to push the score to 5-1 after two.

Down four entering the fifth inning, South County got the spark it needed from the top of the line-up. After a single from Frazier, junior catcher John Fitzgerald drilled an 0-2 offering from Madison starter Jesse Jeter over the left field wall. Senior Peyton Bartlett followed that shot with a single and scored on a Beal double to pull South County within one.

Jeter went 6 1/3 innings, striking out nine. The Warhawks added one in the bottom half of the inning when senior Casey Turner stole home.

Beal threw a complete game for South County and seemed to get stronger as the game went on. He struck out 12 batters, including six in a row starting with the last out in the fifth inning and going to the first out of the seventh.

While the Stallion’s ace was putting up K’s, the offense started rolling. With no one out and two on in the top of the sixth, Frazier stepped to the plate with his team down two and hit a three-run home run to give South County a lead it would not relinquish. The Stallions added five more runs in the seventh to extend their lead to six.

Madison countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh, but could get no closer.

South County moves on and will play Chantilly at 4 p.m. Monday at Robinson.
