D.C. Beltway Area: Girls’ Soccer Top 10

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 27

1. Robinson (8-0-1) — LW: 1
The Rams beat Westfield and Yorktown last week by a combined 7-1, but face only more tests in the final week of the season. Robinson travels to No. 9 Oakton on Tuesday and plays No. 8 Stone Bridge on May 8.
2. Broad Run (9-0-1) — LW: 2
The Spartans have outscored their opponents 37-2 this year, including 15-0 in the last week. Broad Run has five Division I signees and will face Heritage (9-2-1) on Tuesday, Briar Woods (6-3-1) on Wednesday and Loudoun County (5-4-2) on Friday.
3. Loudoun Valley (8-0-0) — LW: 3
The Vikings have torched their first eight opponents, winning by a
combined 36-1 margin and sit comfortably atop the Cedar Run District. Loudoun Valley faces Stonewall Jackson, No. 10 Battlefield and Osbourn on Friday.
4. W.T. Woodson (9-1-1) — LW: 4
The Cavaliers had a trio of 3-0 wins last week, including one on the road against No. 7 McLean on Tuesday. Woodson, though, will be tested in the final week with a pair of non-district games. It hosts No. 6 West Springfield — winners of eight-straight games — on Thursday before hosting No. 9 Oakton on Monday. The combined records of those two opponents: 15-2-1.
5. Chantilly (8-1-1) — LW: 5
The
Chargers
beat the then-No. 7 Cougars, 2-1, on Friday. Chantilly has
outscored its opponents 30-6 this year, but closes with a brutal schedule. It faces No. 8 Stone Bridge at home
on Wednesday, No. 7 McLean on the road on Thursday and Centreville next week.
6. West Springfield (8-1-1) — LW: 8

The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won eight consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw to No. 8 Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 32-0, including an 8-0 win over then-No. 10 South County last week. It faces No. 4 W.T. Woodson on Thursday, which will be covered by DigitalSports.
7. McLean (9-1-0) — LW: 6
The
Highlanders have netted a Northern Region-best 44 goals this season,
while allowing just nine. McLean fell to No. 4 Woodson on Tuesday, 3-0, but rebounded with back-to-back wins over Langley, 2-0 (article and highlights HERE), and Marshall, 5-0. It faces No. 5 Chantilly on Thursday.
8. Stone Bridge (7-2-2) — LW: 9
The
Bulldogs have won six games in a row by a combined 23-3, and all were district wins. Stone Bridge’s
two losses are to No. 2 Broad Run, 2-1, and No. 7 McLean, 2-1. It closes the season with
back-to-back matches against No. 5 Chantilly — to be played this Wednesday — and No. 1 Robinson on May 8.
9. Oakton (7-1-0) — LW: 7
The Cougars have outscored their opponents by a collective 37-5. But last week, Oakton suffered its first loss to No. 5 Chantilly, 2-1, before rebounding to beat Centreville, 5-1. It faces No. 1 Robinson at home tonight.
10. Battlefield (6-2-1) — LW: N/A
The Bobcats beat Culpeper, 8-0, in their only game last week. But a match-up with unbeaten — and untested — No. 3 Loudoun Valley looms huge in Purcellville on Wednesday.

Through 76 minutes on Senior Night, South County’s match with visiting Lake Braddock seemed destined to have a storybook ending for Stallion outside midfielder Max Kleess.

Scoring the game’s only goal in the 17th minute in front of the best scoring defense in the Northern Region: Check.

Successful pre-game prom proposal to fellow senior Julia Ledwith: Check-plus.

Bruin senior Emmanuel Kassim equalizing in the 77th minute to wipe it all out: Check, please.

After 10 minutes of end-to-end play in extra time, the goal by the Lake Braddock captain was all that stood in the way of a perfect night for South County and its Duquesne-bound captain, as the Bruins and Stallions played to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday.

“A player on our high school team did that two years ago,” said Kleess of his prom request, which was aired during the pre-game Senior Night ceremony. “And it’s nice to have a scoreboard like that, so that worked out nice.

“I kind of tried extra hard to score the goal, just so it would make it more special. But it would’ve been better if we won. That would’ve perfected it, especially when it’s Senior Night.”

Kleess put the Stallions on the board when a South County counter-attack gave it numbers in the Lake Braddock defensive third.

Stallion sophomore Zach Crandall played a cross into the mixer, where senior Matt Karwel headed it back to Kleess, who was just outside of the 18.

Kleess settled, played the ball one step to his right and situated his shot perfectly inside the right upper-90.

But South County could not extend its lead and, although Lake Braddock was held without a scoring chance for the majority of the second half, Kassim equalized off a loose ball following a free kick by Bruin junior Neil Seng.

“The defense was stepping up and I knew I just had to stay on-side,” said Kassim, who plays club ball for MPS ’91 Premier. “I saw our outside left back, Tyler Dunn, get the ball and I noticed that he saw me.

“I just had to be on-side to make sure my run was perfect. Everything just clicked. I ran through, the ball came to me at the right time, I took it off my right thigh, took a touch, picked my spot and just put it in.”

In the two five-minute, silver-goal extra periods, each side found scoring chances, but neither could take the advantage.

South County keeper Javier Hernandez and Lake Braddock goalie Joe Conte held the game all-square, a result that kept the Stallions and Bruins frozen atop the Patriot District standings.

For the two captains, the result yielded a mixture of disappointment in missed chances and satisfaction, given their opponent’s respective reputation around the region.

“Offense is always the best defense,” said Kleess, a member of Team America Premier ’91 club team. “We didn’t do that. We should’ve gotten our defense up faster … We can’t give up those late goals.

“I feel like we have easily one of the best keepers in the region — you guys have seen, he has eight shutouts. We need to keep it up defensively and we need to finish more. In the second half of the overtime, when we actually pressured when we had to, we got opportunities.”

Added Kassim: “We could’ve clinched first place in the district with a win in this game. A tie doesn’t help us at all, but we’ll take what we can get.”

D.C. Beltway Area: Boys’ Soccer Top 10

Boys’ Soccer Top 10
*Rankings and records as of April 27

1. Osbourn Park (7-0-1) — LW: 1
The
Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 24-2 this season,
including a 3-0 win over Stonewall Jackson on Friday. The two goals allowed are the lowest among any team in the DigitalSports coverage area. Osbourn Park faces Liberty and Culpeper this week.
2. Robinson (8-1-1) — LW: 2
The
Rams had a pair of one-goal wins last week, beating Herndon on Thursday, 3-2, and Yorktown on Friday, 1-0 in overtime. Robinson faces Oakton (3-5-1) and Fairfax (2-8-0) this week and — with wins in each of those games — would lock up the top seed in the Concorde District Tournament. Only South County has allowed fewer goals among Northern Region teams.
3. Battlefield (7-0-1) — LW: 3
The
Bobcats have only played twice in the last 14 days thanks to cancellations, but remain one of three unbeaten teams in Northern Virginia. Battlefield beat Culpeper, 3-0, in its only game last week and has Fauquier, Osbourn and Liberty slated in a four-day span, starting Tuesday night.
4. Westfield (9-1-0) — LW: 4
The
only
Bulldog blemish is a 3-1 home loss to No. 2 Robinson. Westfield is
the highest scoring team in the D.C. area, having posted 43 goals in
its 10 games. Westfield’s only test last week was a 1-0 win over Sean Murnane‘s former team, Herndon. It faces out-of-district opponents Yorktown (3-5-3), Stuart (3-7) and T.C. Williams (4-8-1) this week.
5. Wakefield (9-0-1) — LW: 7
The Warriors opened eyes around the Northern Region with their 5-1 dismantling over the previously unbeaten — and previously fifth-ranked — Eagles on Friday. Wakefield has three road games this week: Washington-Lee (3-6-2) on Tuesday, West Potomac (3-5-2) on Wednesday and Hayfield (4-4-1) on Monday.
6. Woodbridge (4-1-2) — LW: 6
In their only game last week, the Vikings beat Freedom-Woodbridge, 1-0, on Monday. Woodbridge faces Gar-Field twice in the next four days, with a game against Forest Park sandwiched between on Wednesday. The Vikings have allowed two goals in the last four games (3-0-1).
7. McLean (7-2-1) — LW: 8
The
Highlanders’
two losses are to No. 4 Westfield, 5-2 on March 23, and
No. 7 Wakefield, 4-2 on March 12. McLean drew with then-No. 9 Langley to lock up the regular-season Liberty District title on Thursday, though both teams were short-handed due to club commitments. It faces out-of-district foes Chantilly and Centreville to close out the regular season.
8. South County (9-1-0) — LW: 10
Stallion goalkeeper Javier Hernandez has eight clean sheets in nine games this season. South County beat West Springfield on Wednesday, 1-0, and faces Lake Braddock on Tuesday to decide the regular-season Patriot District title.
9. Stone Bridge (7-1-1) — LW: N/A
The Bulldogs
move into the Top 10 after a pair of Liberty District wins last week, including a 4-1 win over then-No. 9 Langley on Monday. Stone Bridge, which has allowed only seven goals in nine games, travels to Chantilly on Wednesday and faces South Lakes on Monday.
10. Edison (6-1-1) — LW: 5
The
Eagles gave up an early goal to the fifth-ranked Warriors and could never recover, ultimately falling, 5-1. Edison plays Stuart (3-7-0) on Tuesday and non-district opponent Marshall (1-7-1) on Thursday.

Lake Braddock (5-1-3)

Boys’ Soccer Top 10
*Rankings and records as of April 20

1. Osbourn Park (6-0-1) — LW: 1
The
Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 21-2 this season,
including a 3-1 win over Osbourn and a 3-0 win over No.
6 Woodbridge. Osbourn Park tied No. 3 Battlefield, 0-0, on Friday. It faces Loudoun Valley and Stonewall Jackson this week.
2. Robinson (5-1-1) — LW: 2
The Rams had not played since March 30 before they beat Chantilly, 1-0, on Friday. Robinson faces a road test against Herndon — a team that is starting to come together — on Wednesday before an intriguing non-district game with Yorktown on Friday.
3. Battlefield (6-0-1) — LW: 3
The
Bobcats tied the Yellow Jackets, 0-0, on the road in an evenly-matched game to remain in the top spot in the Cedar Run District very early in district play. Battlefield has Osbourn and Culpeper scheduled this week.
4. Westfield (6-1-0) — LW: 4
The
only Bulldog blemish is a 3-1 home loss to No. 2 Robinson. Westfield is
the highest scoring team in the D.C. area, having posted 32 goals in
its seven games, but it has not played since April 1. Westfield travels to Chantilly for an early-afternoon game on Wednesday and hosts Fairfax Friday night.
5. Edison (6-0-1) — LW: 5
The
Eagles drew, 2-2, with No. 6 Woodbridge on April 7, but have not played since then. They play Falls Church on Wednesday as a warm-up for Friday’s match with No. 7 Wakefield, which will decide the top team in the National District standings.
6. Woodbridge (3-1-2) — LW: 6
In
its six games, the Vikings have faced three Top 10 teams: No. 1
Osbourn Park (3-0 loss), No. 5 Edison (2-2 tie) and No. 10 Park View
(4-1 win). Woodbridge tied Forest Park, 0-0, on Friday and has Freedom (Woodbridge) and Potomac on the schedule in the upcoming week.
7. Wakefield (8-0-1) — LW: 7
The Warriors won their only game this week — 2-1 over Mount Vernon — and will face No. 5 Edison on April 24.
8. McLean (6-2-0) — LW: 9
The
Highlanders’ two losses are to No. 4 Westfield, 5-2 on March 23, and
No. 7 Wakefield, 4-2 on March 12. McLean beat Jefferson and South Lakes last week, but has a critical road game at No. 9 Langley this Thursday.
9. Langley (6-1-1) — LW: N/A
The
Saxons move into the Top 10 after a pair of 4-0 wins last week over Marshall and W.T. Woodson. Langley has won six-straight games and faces Madison and No. 8 McLean at home this week.
10. South County (7-1-0) — LW: N/A
Stallion goalkeeper Javier Hernandez has seven clean sheets in only eight games this season. The lone exception was a 3-0 loss to T.C. Williams (4-6-1) on April 2. South County faces West Springfield and Hayfield this week.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Osbourn (5-3-0) — LW: 8
Park View (6-3-1) — LW: 10

D.C. Beltway Area: Girls’ Soccer Top 10

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 20

1. Robinson (6-0-1) — LW: 1
In the year after they won the Virginia AAA State title, the Rams only fortified their strength of schedule. Robinson has faced No. 4 W.T. Woodson, No. 5 Chantilly, perennial Northern Region power Lake Braddock, perennial Central Region power Deep Run and will play No. 7 Oakton on April 28. After beating the Chargers, 2-0, in impressive fashion on Friday (article and highlights HERE), the Rams face West Potomac, Westfield and Yorktown this week.
2. Broad Run (7-0-1) — LW: 4
The Spartans have outscored their opponents 22-2 this year, including 8-0 in the last week. Broad Run beat Dulles District foes Potomac Falls and Dominion 5-0 and 3-0, respectively.
3. Loudoun Valley (7-0-0) — LW: 5
The Vikings have torched their first seven opponents, winning by a combined 31-1 margin and sit comfortably atop the Cedar Run District.
4. W.T. Woodson (6-1-1) — LW: 2
Weather willing, Woodson plays No. 6 McLean on April 21. Last week, after opening with a 2-0 road loss to No. 9 Stone Bridge, the Cavaliers rebounded with a 5-3 win over Langley.
5. Chantilly (6-1-1) — LW: 3
The
Chargers beat Fairfax, 3-0, early last week before falling to No. 1 Robinson, 2-0, on the road on Friday. Even with that defeat, Chantilly has outscored its opponents 25-4 this year. It faces No. 7 Oakton at home on Friday.
6. McLean (7-0-0) — LW: 6
The
Highlanders have netted a Northern Region-best 37 goals this season,
while allowing just six, but a 15-0 season-opening win at Wakefield
skews that statistic. McLean faces No. 4 Woodson and Langley this week, weather willing.
7. Oakton (6-0-0) — LW: 7
No
team has gotten within three goals of the Cougars this season as they
have outscored their opponents by a collective 31-2. In a four-day span beginning on April 24, Oakton plays No. 5 Chantilly, Centreville and No. 1 Robinson.
8. West Springfield (6-1-1) — LW: 9
The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won six consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw to No. 9 Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 21-0.
9. Stone Bridge (4-2-2) — LW: N/A
The Bulldogs have won three games in a row by a combined 13-0, including a 2-0 home win over then-No. 2 W.T. Woodson on Tuesday. Stone Bridge’s two losses are to No. 2 Broad Run, 2-1, and No. 6 McLean, 2-1. It faces South Lakes and Madison this week, but closes the season with back-to-back matches against No. 5 Chantilly and No. 1 Robinson.
10. South County (3-1-2) — LW: N/A
Since a disappointing 4-1 loss to Centreville, the Stallions are 3-0-2, with their three wins coming by a combined 21-0 margin. South County also tied No. 5 Chantilly, 1-1, on March 24. It faces No. 8 West Springfield at home on Wednesday night.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
