South County senior shortstop Meaghan Hunt had barely rounded first base Saturday afternoon at Madison High school when, realizing her fourth-inning shot to right field had cleared the fence, she raised both arms above her head and wiggled with excitement.

She didn’t have the luxury of wiggling as she rounded first again in the sixth inning, but her two-RBI double to center field left certainly the rest of her team dancing in the dugout.

Hunt’s three RBI lifted South County to a 3-1 victory over Centreville and gave the Stallions their first Northern Region championship in school history.

South County becomes the first Patriot District team to win the regional crown since Lake Braddock did in 2002, and only the second Patriot District team to win since the league was created in 1995.

“We came into this game having already met our goals,” South County Coach Al Thompson said. “Our goal was to go to the state tournament in the year before we lost four awesome seniors. And when we hit that goal it didn’t deflate us, but it calmed us. So we came into this game ready to have fun.

“There is a great softball team over there in that other dugout. We wouldn’t have wanted to play any other team that wasn’t their caliber. This was the game we wanted, and it was a great one. No one ran away with this.”

In large part, the championship game between Centreville and South County was a pitchers’ dual. Wildcat senior standout Jessica Ferrick and Stallion junior standout Chelsey Dunham, the region’s top two pitchers, both bent but rarely broke.

Hunt’s solo home run in the top of the fourth gave the Stallions a 1-0 lead.

But the Wildcats responded immediately, tying it up in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI by freshman second baseman Courtney Burke that scored senior third baseman Kirsten Sepulveda, who reached on an line drive single up-the-middle.

And so the battle was back on.

That was until the top of the sixth inning when, with two two outs and two runners on, Hunt blasted a shot to deep centerfield to plated two runs and proved the difference-maker.

“Both pitchers were absolutely great,” Thompson said. “Unfortunately for them, there was one pitch that was left up for Meaghan to take and she took it. She likes them high. So that was a big, big mistake.

“But it could just have easily been Chelsey who could have thrown that pitch to their catcher [Victoria Marvin] or Jess Ferrick and that would have gone over the fence and it would have been us looking at it go goodbye.”

That almost happened in the bottom of the sixth when Ferrick, with one runner on and one out, took a pitch over the left field fence just a few feet outside of the foul pole. But after yielding a single to Ferrick instead, Dunham came back and struck out her eighth Centreville batter to then watched at junior outfielder Karly Thompson made a catch in center to push the game into its final inning.

“It’s a game of inches sometimes,” Centreville Coach Rich Ferrick said. “But we fought hard. We had runners on base and in scoring position, we just have to find a way to score those runs. But the girls hung in there and never quit … I’m very proud of them.”

The Stallions then retired all three batters it faced in the bottom of the seventh — on fly-ball snags from Hunt, junior second baseman Taylor Dillow and senior first baseman Kayla Reisinger — to seal the victory.

“The way I feel about it is if we came back here tomorrow night and played the result could be different,” Thompson said. “It was just two great teams and a great game.”

The Northern Region championship games for baseball, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and softball were postponed Friday due to heavy rain and lightening.

It didn’t help matters that three of the participating schools — Centreville, Oakton and Westfield — were also hosting prom Friday night, which precluded games from being started too late.

As a result, all four games were eventually rescheduled for Saturday afternoon at Madison High School.

The boys’ soccer game between Robinson and Westfield was called with 15 minutes, 58 seconds showing on the clock in the first half. The two teams, which were locked in a scoreless tie, will resume play at 12 p.m.

It was a similar situation in the girls’ soccer game, where Chantilly and Oakton were also locked in a scoreless tie with just 1:58 remaining in the first half when the game was called.

The girls’ soccer game will re-start at 2 p.m.

The baseball and softball games, which never got started, will both begin at 3 p.m. The baseball finale will feature Lake Braddock and West Springfield; the softball title game will feature Centreville and South County.

Playoff Softball: South County 6, McLean 5 (9 Innings)

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links to the left to access a full photo gallery and dozens of highlights from Wednesday’s semifinal game!

South County junior pitcher Chelsey Dunham was swarmed by her teammates near the pitching circle at Robinson High School Wednesday night after the Stallions come-from-behind victory over McLean in the night’s second Northern Region semifinal.

But unlike most games, it wasn’t a standout performance on the mound that ignited the celebration.

It was her heroics at the plate.

Dunham hit a two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning that scored junior third baseman Stephanie Sbardella and propelled the Stallions into Friday’s Northern Region championship. It also gave South County its first Virginia AAA state tournament berth in school history.

“We set our goal two years ago to go to the state tournament,” Stallions’ Coach Al Thompson said. “And it’s really exciting to do it, especially this year when, for the first time, we’re going to lose four seniors. And I love that they get to go with us.

“I also love that the eight juniors are going to get their shot now.”

That opportunity almost went to the young but determined McLean squad that totaled 11 hits and scored more run against the Stallions than any team had this season.

The Highlanders, who have no seniors on their roster, had already made school history by advancing to the semifinal round. And, leading 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, they came within just two outs of moving on to the championship game.

But with the bases loaded and only one out, South County senior shortstop Meaghan Hunt blasted a two RBI triple to left field that scored Sbardella and junior second baseman Taylor Dillow to knot the score.

McLean freshman left fielder Allison Wilhelm alertly chased down the ball and hit shortstop Lauren McColgan, who was waiting on the grass in shallow left field. McColgan, who made several exceptional plays, turned and fired a strike to junior catcher Carolyn Gilbertson, who made the tag on South County senior first baseman Kayla Reisinger at the plate to save what would have been the game-winning run.

McColgan then made another great snag at shortstop for the inning’s third out to send the game to extra innings, but it was Dunham who sealed the come-from-behind victory two innings later.

“This was a stomach-sickening game,” Thompson said, laughing. “I’ve said before that we’re hard to score on, and that wasn’t the case tonight. So it was the first time we’d seen that. So the offense had to step up.

“I’m just so proud of the girls. McLean came to play tonight, just like great teams always do. But we’re not quitters.

“We hung in there and responded when we needed to. I think it’s fair to say it was exciting for everybody.”

Playoff Baseball: Westfield 3, South County 1

Click the links above for all photos and videos from the Northern Region Tournament quarterfinal game!

The Stallions loaded the bases trailing by three runs with one out in the top of the fifth inning and Bulldog coach Chuck Welch, the Northern Region Coach of the Year, called time.

His message to sophomore ace Aaron Hoover was simple.

“Coach came out and said, ‘Bow your neck right here. This shows what you’re made of,'” Hoover recalled from the mound meeting. “‘This is either going to make it or break it. You just have to throw strikes right here and trust your defense.'”

What followed was a three-pitch strikeout of South County’s lead-off hitter, followed by a rally-******* pop out to second.

In fact, Hoover needed only 18 total pitches to earn the final eight outs — 15 of which were strikes — as the Bulldogs eliminated the Stallions, 3-1, in the Northern Region quarterfinals at Madison on Memorial Day.

“It was getting in the rhythm,” said Hoover, who went the distance, striking out five and scattering five hits. “It was getting in the rhythm, throwing those strikes and getting outs. That’s all it’s about.”

While South County starter Brennan Miller held Westfield to only six hits himself, throwing just 18 total balls, the Bulldogs recorded half of their hits in a pivotal fourth-inning rally.

After senior Tommy Verbanic led off with an infield single, senior Nick Garifo moved him to third with a base hit of his own. Sophomore Hayden Ferington put two runners in scoring position with a frozen rope, RBI single to left, before junior pinch runner Kyle McLaughlin stole home on a failed squeeze attempt.

The Bulldogs led, 3-0, until a solo home run by Stallion senior Seth Jordan in the sixth.

“I was sitting back on a curveball, saw a fastball and ripped it to left field,” said Ferington, who also threw out a would-be base stealer. “It scored an RBI, it was a great at-bat.

“I’ve been struggling a little at the plate, so this year has been tough.”

While the Bulldogs are 21-1 this year — the best record in the Washington, D.C. area — Ferington was not alone in his offensive patchiness.

Westfield ranks 14th in the Northern Region in runs scored per game, but is by far the top-ranked team in runs allowed.

With the lights-out pitching of Hoover, junior Danny Thorpe and senior closer Ryan Williams, plus impeccable defense, Westfield gives up just 1.91 runs per game and has yielded one run or fewer 12 times.

That includes its first seven Concorde District games, when it scored three runs or fewer six times. But the Bulldogs still managed a perfect district record by allowing exactly 1 run per game to Concorde teams in 14 match-ups this year.

Their left-handed second-team All-Region pitcher claims those close, low-scoring games in March and April have paid definite dividends since postseason play began. Westfield faces Lake Braddock in the regional semifinals at Robinson on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

“Those games have obviously paid off,” said Hoover, who has a 1.06 season ERA. “Coach said early in the season that those games are going to benefit us later in the season and they really have. Our defense is so solid that have kept it with those runs.”

No. 10 –Barry, Barry Extraordinary
Northern Region, Virginia
— In a match-up between teams way too good to happen in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament, Robinson senior Audrey Barry slotted home the game-winning, triple-overtime golden goal in the 91st minute to lift her side over Stone Bridge, 2-1.

No. 9 –Rams Slammed    Save    Winning PK
Northern Region, Virginia
— Robinson, with its penalty-kick loss in the Concorde finals, fell into the Group of Death for the Northern Region Tournament. But after surviving a triple-overtime scare by Stone Bridge in the first round, the defending state champs traveled to West Springfield to meet one of the most dominant sides in Northern Virginia. The Spartans and Rams were tied at one after regulation and four overtimes and went to penalty kicks. On the sixth kick, West Springfield senior goalkeeper Beth Anne Nowak came up with the save and, on the next try, senior birthday girl Julia Stejskal blasted home the game-winner.

No. 8 — Comeback City
Northern Region, Virginia
— Last week, in the Concorde District championship, Robinson trailed Chantilly by two with 5 minutes, 30 seconds remaining and scored three unanswered goals to hand the Chargers their first loss of the year. Last Wednesday, in the Northern Region final, the Rams trailed by three goals with 8:55 to go and scored four unanswered goals to win the regional title, 10-9.

No. 7 – Colella Gem

Northern Region, Virginia
— In the first round of the Northern Region Tournament, Chantilly senior — and second-team All-Region member — John Colella threw a complete-game, one-hitter at Stone Bridge, as the Chargers beat the Bulldogs, 3-2, to advance to the regional quarterfinals.

No. 6 –Patriots Snap Spartan Streak
Loudoun County, Virginia
Entering its semifinal match-up with Park View, Broad Run softball had won 67 consecutive Dulles District softball games. But the Patriots snapped the streak with a 3-0 win, riding a complete-game shutout by sophomore pitcher Robin Heironimus.

No. 5Out of the Woods
Loudoun County, Virginia
— In its first year of existence, 2006, Briar Woods softball went 0-for-the season, losing every game. The next year, it won once. But, in 2009, The Falcons stepped completely into new, uncharted territory, winning the league championship. On the legs of a game-winning single by sophomore Alexandra Fierszt, Briar Woods beat Park View, 4-3, in the finals on Friday.

No. 4 –Dern Good Performance
Northern Region, Virginia
— Lake Braddock junior southpaw Brian Derner owned the mound in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament at Mount Vernon on Monday. He threw four perfect innings — including 34 of his 46 pitches for strikes — before coach Jody Rutherford pulled him to preserve his arm for later in the week. He struck out 7 of the 12 batters he faced. Rutherford said pre-game that Derner, who suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder while snowboarding last winter, was due for a breakout game.

No. 3 –One and Dun’ham
Northern Region, Virginia
— South County junior pitcher Chelsea Dunham dominated the center circle on Friday, twirling a 13-strikeout, 1-hit complete-game shutout as the Stallions won their third-straight Patriot District championship. South County beat Annandale, 1-0.

No. 2 –Madness?
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Broad Run girls’ soccer continues its historic tear. The Spartans, ranked No. 4 nationally by ESPNRise, are 18-0-1 after winning the Dulles District title. Broad Run beat the only team, Loudoun County, that earned a point against it, 2-1, thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter and Rachel Tharp in overtime. In its 2-0, championship win over Heritage, Hunter earned her 58th career clean sheet, a VHSL record.

No. 1 — Bailey’s Crossroads
Northern Region, Virginia
— On Wednesday night, Langley lacrosse was making its seventh all-time appearance in the Northern Region championship — its fourth under current coach Earl Brewer — but had yet to win a title. It took two overtimes, but the Saxons earned their historic, 6-5 over the Rams when junior attackman Ethan Bailey scored this game-winner with 3:02 left in the second, sudden-victory overtime period.

United Soccer League PDL: Northern Virginia 1, Hampton Roads 1

By Phil Murphy
Senior Multimedia/Content Editor
Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area

Click the links above for all photos and videos from the PDL game! All videos posted at 9 p.m.!

In its second home game of the season, Northern Virginia had Hampton Roads on the ropes early, but quickly felt the bite of the Piranhas on a fluke of a goal.

The Royals and Piranhas drew, 1-1, in the USL Premiere Developmental League match held at Fairfax High School on Saturday.

Still, Royal coach Tom Torres hopes the point at home against a quality side will spur his team, which stands at 0-2-2 through four games.

“It’s a tough one because they didn’t have a lot of subs and we thought we could try and get behind them a little bit,” said Torres, also the current coach at Westfield. “Fortunately, we got a point out of it. Obviously, we would have rather gotten the win.

“We thought being the home team and having a decent crowd here, we were hoping to have a little bit better of a result. But that’s soccer, that’s why it’s cruel.”

But seven minutes in, a Northern Virginia counterattack gave it an earlier advantage on a goal by outside midfielder Ernie Marquez, a graduate from Woodbridge.

Striker — and Westfield alumnus — A.J. Sheta dribbled deep into the right channel before crossing to the top of the 18-yard box. Central midfielder Eber Martinez — a former Gar-Field standout — dummied the ball to central mid Yu Hoshide (YKK AP, Japan), who rattled the far post with a first-time shot.

Marquez was ready for the rebound, though, 13 yards out for the open-goal finish.

It was in the 17th minute, though, that Hampton Roads equalized on an uncontested header by Robert Foglesong (Old Dominion) after a long throw-in by Edward Floyd (Central Connecticut State).

“When you lose the ball in the middle of the field, it’s tough to recover when the other team countering,” Torres said. “With the low numbers, they played low pressure and the expected to get behind us on the counter.

“A low throw, a missed mark and a free header from six to eight yards, it’s unfortunate … We probably could have been more organized and more disciplined with our marking, but it is what it is.”

While disappointed over the tie with the Piranhas (1-1-1), Torres hopes the point against the team that won the league two of the last three years will help the confidence of his side.

The Royals feature defender Mike Green, who played at the University of Virginia and with the Kansas City Wizards of the MLS; Mo Hughes, who played the University of Alabama-Birmingham and with the Atlanta Silverbacks of the USL; and a number of other local stars.

The 16-game season lasts through mid-July, which includes six more home games, highlights NCAA, professional and semipro talent, much of which was bred in Washington, D.C. area high schools.

“It’s local, right in the heart of Fairfax and we also have a Hellwig location for our Prince William players,” said Torres, in his first season coaching Northern Virginia. “We just want to get as many people out here as we can. We had some drums here today, but it’d be nice to get a few more people out. I think it’s a good opportunity to see a decent level of play.

“We’ve got about 15 guys in our pool that played locally in high school, in Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia. It’s a great opportunity to see what some of those guys are doing if you can’t get to their colleges far away. But we’ve also got a lot of local college guys and a lot of local coaches that continue to play, as well.”

Boys’ Playoff Soccer: Westfield 1, South County 0

Story By Jeffery Gibert

In a match-up of the two best scoring defenses in the Northern Region, the more-eastbound team had the sun set on its season.

Bulldog senior forward Irvin Herrera put in only goal of the game as sophomore goalkeeper Kody Palmer outdueled Patriot District Player of the Year, Stallion junior Javier Hernandez, while leading Westfield to a 1-0 victory over South County on Thursday.

“We’ve just worked so hard to get this far,” Palmer said. “And it’s great to get a one-nil win, and especially the shut out.

“That’s what matters most.”

The Stallions came out strong to start the game and were the aggressors, but the tide shifted in the 19th minute. Sophomore forward Zach Crandall broke away from the defense for a one-on-one opportunity with Palmer, but Palmer stoned his shot.

“At first, I was like, ‘Oh ****, he’s coming after me,'” said Palmer, a former teammate of Crandall on MPS Hurricanes ’93. “I actually knew the kid because I played club with him, so I knew his tendencies, so I knew what to do on that play.

“I felt pretty good about the save and I thought that kept my team in it.”

Then, Bulldogs got the break they needed. In the 28th minute, Herrera scored off of a broken play to put the visiting side in front by a goal on an assist by senior forward Sean Murnane.

“Sean played me a through ball in the air, and I don’t know what happened to the defender,” Herrera said. “I think he slipped, and I just had to jump over him.

“I thought the keeper was going to come out and get it, but he didn’t, so I just put it in the net.”

Tensions rose substantially after Herrera’s goal.

Both teams pick up the intensity of their play and fought harder for the ball, which led to South County senior forward Max Kleess going down with a temporary injury in the 40th minute.

“The ref let us do what we wanted to do,” Herrera said. “He let us play and he really reffed a good game.”

Added Palmer, currently on the D.C. United Academy U-16 team: “[The game] is very physical. Both teams just want to win and they’ll do whatever it takes.”

In the second half, both teams manufactured scoring chances, but neither side got anything special going.

In the 52nd minute, Stallion senior defender Mojtaba Amin had a solid strike on goal, but it was Palmer’s night as he came up with the big save.

Herrera almost put in his second goal in the 64th minute, but Hernandez showed why he was the Patriot District Player of the Year, coming up with the spectacular save.

In the waning minutes, South County gave it all they had to try to send the game to overtime, but this time, instead of Kleess hitting the amazing shot in the 79th minute as he did in the Patriot District Championship game, he just missed wide left.

This is only the third time that the Stallions have been shut out, all season.

“They were coming pretty tough on us,” Palmer said. “It feels great to shut them out. A shut out is always good, no matter what team you get it on, but especially them.

“They were good.”
