Week 12 Top 10 Plays

No. 10 — Back to Back to Colin, Colin
Woodson senior Colin Dempsey intercepts a pass late in the first half against South County and, on the next play, catches a 55-yard touchdowns pass from senior quarterback Connor Reilly. The Cavaliers beat the Stallions, 28-9, to advance to their first regional final since 2004, when they won Division 5. Yes, Woodson was D-5 then, don’t send me an email.

No. 9 —  Rogers Plays Robber
One play after the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs to the Warhawks at the 49-yard line, Stone Bridge junior Dexter Rogers regained possession with this diving interception.

No. 8Pass the Pl-Eight
With its 27-8 win over Madison, sparked by this 56-yard, first-touchdown run by junior Marcus Harris, Stone Bridge reached its eighth consecutive regional final. It played in three Division 4 regional finals from 2002-2004 and the last five Division 5 regional championship games.

No. 7Hands Worth More than Fingertips
Hayfield senior Rayshawn Rigans catches this deflected pass — Lee senior linebacker Eric Wright got a piece of the ball — from senior Anton McCallum for a 20-yard touchdown just seconds before halftime.

No. 6 — He Went to Jared … Oops
Robinson first-team all-district junior defensive back Jared Velasquez extends for a one-handed interception on the second play of the second half, which led to the Rams’ only score. Velasquez, though, severely injured his elbow on the next play and did not return to the game.

No. 5Rayshawn Sparks Huge Night
Rigans scored his first touchdown Friday by catching a simple crossing route, shaking off two tackles and breaking a set of ankles at the goal line for a 40-yard touchdown reception from McCallum. At this point, the Hawks led, 10-0.

No. 4Rigans Hat Trick

Rigans caught four passes Friday for 99 yards and three scores. The third — this undefendable leaping reception at the goal line — was the most impressive and gave Hayfield the lead, 24-21, with 2 minutes, 41 seconds remaining in the game.

No. 3Drizzy Drama
Lee senior Idreis Augustus rushed 24 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns Friday, headlined by the game-winning touchdown run with 1:08 remaining. He took a delayed, weakside pitch, somehow reached the corner and willed his way to the 23-yard score. The Lancers beat the Hawks, 28-24, to advance to the Division 5 Northern Region final.

No. 2Great Scott
With only enough time to run one play before halftime, Lee coach Rob Everett directed senior Greg Lopez to throw a pass to the end zone. Lopez, instead, checked down to sophomore C.J. Lewis on a crossing route. Hayfield freshman safety Wesley Scott shows why you should never disobey your coach. Ever.

No. 1Peres Lights
Robinson had cut Lake Braddock’s led to 10 points with less than eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Bruin senior Peres Nubong‘s retaliation proved the fatal blow. He returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards, sparking 21 unanswered points by the visitors as part of a 38-7 road win, the first for Lake Braddock in the annual series since the regional semifinals in 1999.

Football: South County at W.T. Woodson Playoff Preview

By Phil Murphy

Senior Multimedia/Content Manager, Washington D.C. Metro Area

**Click here for other semifinal previews in the Northern Region!!**

No. 5 South County (7-4) at No. 1 W.T. Woodson (10-1), Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Offensive Rank (ppg/Div. 6): South County – 14th (17.7); W.T. Woodson – 2nd (31.9)
Defensive Rank (ppg/Div. 6): South County – 3rd (15.9); W.T. Woodson – 4th (16.2)
Last Meeting: 2009 — Week 10 — W.T. Woodson beat South County, 35-0
All-Time Series: W.T. Woodson leads, 1-0

With last week’s road win over Westfield, South County accomplished two all-time firsts: The Stallions reached seven wins in a season and won a playoff game.

Show ’em what they’ve won: A rematch with the team that shelled them by 35 two weeks ago.

Woodson’s first four scoring drives started in South County territory and it led, 21-0, four seconds into the second quarter.

The second quarter has been the Cavaliers’ strength in recent weeks. They’ve outscored opponents 90-13 in that period in the last five weeks.

The Stallions, meanwhile, are more reliant on their running game than any other team in Division 6. They are 7-0 when surpassing 3.0 yards per carry, 0-4 when they are not.

That includes 65 team rushing yards on 26 carries in the Week 10 loss at Woodson.

Last week at Westfield, South County rebounded with 143 rushing yards on 29 attempts and scored 27 first-half points after scoring 23 in the previous four games combined. Twenty of those points came in the final 4 minutes, 53 seconds of the second quarter.

Only in their 35-0 win at Washington-Lee in Week 2 did the Stallions score more points in a half.

The Cavaliers, meanwhile, overcame non-existent time of possession in the second half last week. Woodson beat defending regional champion Oakton, 31-16, despite running just 10 of the 60 second-half plays.

Still, thanks to a 57-yard touchdown run by junior Paul Fridley and a 65-yarder by senior James Johnson, the Cavaliers actually extended their lead after halftime.

For South County to swing the upset, its second in as many weeks, it needs to both bypass 3.0 yards per carry — no kidding — and hold Woodson senior quarterback Connor Reilly under 6.0 yards per attempt.

The Cavs are 7-0 when he posts more than that.

The Stallions held the Bulldogs to 5.17 yards per pass attempt in the quarterfinals.

South County also allowed just 59 yards after halftime, 14 in the fourth quarter.

The key for Woodson is responsibility with the ball and its efficiency when its offense is directed away from the boundary. The vast majority of its spread offense is run to the wide side of the field, so angles and timing on pitches are integral.

Week 11 Top 10 Plays

Hon. Mention — Roland Roll Out

In the first quarter at Madison, Warhawk senior quarterback Eric Roland takes off on a designed roll out and dives for the pylon for an 11-yard touchdown run.

Hon. Mention — Angus Stakes Claim
In the first quarter at Madison, Eagle senior running back Angus Harper takes a weakside handoff, bounces against the flow of play and gets the corner for a 3-yard score that covered 30 yards.

Hon. Mention — Braden from Carson, Daily
Chantilly senior receiver Braden Voorhies skies for a 26-yard, juggling reception from quarterback Carson Romine over a Robinson defender, sparking the Chargers’ only scoring drive in their 10-7 loss to the Rams.

Hon. Mention — Sesay Pickle
Hayfield junior Hashim Sesay pulls down an athletic interception late in the first half at Yorktown. With the Patriots’ receiver suddenly acting as a defender, Sesay fends him off and pins the ball to his facemask for the pick and touchback.

No. 10 — End Zone Beckons Bechert
Early in the fourth quarter against Lake Braddock, Fairfax senior quarterback Jack Bechert dances around the pocket, eludes pressure and helicopters into the end zone between two defenders for an athletic, 3rd-and-goal touchdown run.

No. 9Sesay Hit Stick
Yorktown was driving in the first quarter, but faced a 3rd-and-9 at Hayfield’s 12-yard line. The Patriots appeared to have a touchdown, but Hawk junior Hashim Sesay had other plans as the ball reached the receiver. Sesay lowered his shoulder, cracked the Yorktown intended receiver and forced an incompletion, preserving Hayfield’s lead. The Patriots’ ensuing field goal attempt was blocked.

No. 8– Impressive INTs
The Lowe Down

In the third quarter of a two-score game against Lake Braddock, Fairfax senior defensive end Richard Lowe swats a pass attempt straight into the air, pivots and plucks the ball in one fluid motion for an interception and a 17-yard return. The Rebels’ upset bid fell short, though, 19-14.

How Sweet it Is

Westfield senior Ryan Sweet blows up South County’s attempt at a bubble screen, shoving the blocker into the intended receiver. Beyond that, the pass deflects off the blocker’s back and Sweet had the presence of mind to secure an interception.

No. 7Cougars Flick Fleas
With minutes remaining it his season, Oakton coach Joe Thompson reached deep into the bag of tricks. Cougar junior quarterback Jimmy Boone, junior running back Luke Willis and senior Matt Chandler pulled off a perfect flea-flicker, as Boone hit Willis for a 46-yard score.

No. 6 — Bulldog Bite
Westfield sophomore running back Kendall Anderson bounces off-tackle weakside and flattens a South County defensive back at the goal line. This 18-yard touchdown sparked Anderson to a four-carry, 54-yard night.

No. 5Cougar Case of the Mondays
Woodson junior Tyler Monday fields this Oakton punt on the hop and heads toward the home sideline. In turning the corner, Monday gets leveling blocks from seniors Charles Basil, Patrick Bulger and Betrand Ngampa, springing a 36-yard return. (**Second most watched clip of the week!!)

No. 4– QB Theft
Picks Pence, None the Richer

Madison senior defensive tackle Charlie Pence pops the ball from the hand of the Edison quarterback and senior defensive end Kevin Sampson grabs it out of the air, earning the Warhawks possession at the Eagles’ 5-yard line. Madison avenged its last two playoff eliminations, defeating postseason-rival Edison, 31-10.

Greeting Card’illo

Yorktown senior linebacker Erik Cardillo gets to Hayfield’s quarterback on a blitz and plucks the ball from his hand — mid-release — resulting in a recorded sack, fumble forced and fumble recovery.

No. 3Marshall Law Nazrul’es Pats
Yorktown marched 54 yards on the opening drive of its quarterfinal against Hayfield, but had to settle for a would-be 20-yard field goal. Hawk junior linebacker Justin Marshall had other plans, though, blocking the kick, allowing senior Nazrul Islam to scoop the loose ball and head 84 yards for the first of five first-half Hayfield touchdowns. The Hawks won their first playoff game in 16 years, 34-6. (**Most watched clip of the week!!)

No. 2Stoked
As time expired for halftime, Woodson senior Connor Reilly dumped a pass over the middle to sophomore tailback Jonathan Stokes. Stokes bounced off two defenders, got the corner and headed to the end zone for a 22-yard, buzzer-beating score. The touchdown doubled the Cavs’ lead, allowing them to coast to a 31-16, first-round win.

No. 1Me, Myself and Iyebote
As time expired for halftime, South County senior quarterback Aaron Andrews launched an end-zone-bound pass to junior receiver Oniyemi Iyebote with Westfield defensive backs looming. Iyebote pulled down the 28-yard touchdown pass to cap a 50-point first half. It also proved the game-winning score as South County beat Westfield, 27-23, for the only road win of the quarterfinal round.

GAME SUMMARY
In a battle of two of the best defensive teams in the region, Westfield and South County lit up the scoreboard Saturday night, with the Stallions taking the game, 27-23, advancing to the Division 6 semifinals.

The Bulldogs got the ball to start the game and started at their own 49 yard line. Three plays later, Westfield senior quarterback Danny Fenyak made the first mistake of the game by throwing an interception to senior defensive back Andre Simmons (Vanderbilt). The Stallions capitalized on that mistake and drove down the field and took the 7-0 lead on a 9-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Aaron Andrews. The Bulldogs came back on the next drive and ran the ball down the field and scored on a Bryan Monticue 18-yard touchdown run. James Crossett tacked on the extra point and the score was tied, 7-7.

The score stayed tied only until seven seconds had run off the clock in the period, when Crossett booted a 34-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 10-7 lead.

The first play of the next drive resulted in a fumble and Westfield recovered the ball and took over at the South County 8-yard line. Four plays later, Fenyak found senior receiver Gary Turner in the corner of the end zone to extend the Bulldogs lead to 16-7, after a bad hold cost the Bulldogs the extra point.

The Westfield defense made its presence felt again by forcing Andrews to make a bad pass that was intercepted by senior defensive back Ryan Sweet. It was not long after that, one play and :07 seconds to be exact, when sophomore running back Kendall Anderson found the scoring sheet with an 18-yard score that put the Bulldogs up 23-7.

The Stallions refused to give up and decided to go 77 yards down to field and score on a David Jordan, 3-yard run to cut the deficit to 23-13 after the extra point was blocked by Sweet.

The next drive ended with a Bulldog punt so the Stallions got the ball on their own 22. They started the drive with a 24-yard run by Andrews and later that drive he found more running room and took off for a 28-yard scamper down to the Bulldog 19. South County found the end zone two plays later on a 1-yard run, a direct snap to Jordan. The Westfield lead was dwindled to 23-20 with :59 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Westfield fumbled three plays into its next possession and South County took over at the Bulldog 27-yard line with :18 seconds to go in the half. After two incomplete passes by Andrews, the Stallions were left with :05 seconds and one last shot to score. Andrews heaved a pass into the end zone and junior wide receiver Oyinemi Iyebote made a great catch for a touchdown as time expired. The Stallions scored 20 points in the final five minutes of the half to shock the Bulldogs and take a 27-23 lead at halftime as the fog was rising at a steady pace at the Westfield Sports Complex.

The scoring was over for the game so it was time for the defense to shine. The two teams traded punts on the next three drives and the Bulldogs set up shop at the Stallion 40-yard line to start their next drive. They drove down the field and looked like they would score but Crossett’s 31-yard field goal attempt was blocked by senior Charles Meyers of the Stallions.

The clock started to wind down as the punters made more cameos in this game.

With just over 3 minutes remaining Fenyak hit Turner with what looked like a Bulldog first down but an ineligible man down field penalty backed them up. The next play picked up that first down with a pass to senior wide receiver Aaron Scoville, but two plays later Fenyak was picked off by Mark Jorgenson.

Stallions take over in the victory formation and Andrews took the knee and the game was over.

With this win, the Stallions beat the Bulldogs for the first time in school history improving their record to 1-3 against Westfield. South County earned its first seven-win campaign in school history, as well. Also, the Stallions advanced to a rematch with Woodson next Friday night at Woodson High School in the semifinals of the Northern Region Division 6 Football Playoffs.

The two teams matched up last week and the Cavaliers won, 35-0, over the Stallions.

PLAYMAKERS OF THE GAME:
Considering the exceptional play of both offenses in the first half and both defenses in the second half, tons of choices for this from both teams but Saturday night’s honors go to two players who carried their teams all the way through the game.

For the Stallions, the honor goes to senior quarterback Aaron Andrews. Aaron had seven rushes for 73 yards and a touchdown. He also completed 13-of-25 passes for 126 yards, had one interception and the crucial game-winning touchdown pass to Iyebote on the final play of the firsthalf. Andrews took many hard shots from a tough Bulldog defense, but got back up after all of them and continued to lead his team to victory.

For the Bulldogs, the honor goes to senior Dylan Doty. Dylan was always around the ball on defense on was throwing his body into the ball carrier every time.

Football: South County at Westfield Playoff Preview

By Phil Murphy

Senior Multimedia/Content Manager, Washington D.C. Metro Area

**CLICK HERE to see previews for other games from around the Northern Region!!**

No. 5 South County (6-4) vs. No. 4 Westfield (6-4) at Westfield on Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Offensive Rank (ppg): South County – 15th (16.8); Westfield – T8th (21.7)
Defensive Rank (ppg): South County – T2nd (15.2); Westfield – 4th (15.9)
All-Time Series: Westfield leads, 3-0
Last meeting: 2008 — Week 1 — Westfield won, 9-7

This will almost certainly be the lowest scoring first-round match-up.

Both the Stallions and Bulldogs rank in the bottom half of Division 6 scoring offenses and both are in the top four among Division 6 scoring defenses.

Throw in weathered, natural playing surface and this one has “13-7, Final” written all over it.

In the last game of the series, last year’s season-opener, the quarterbacks went a combined 13-for-37 passing for 116 yards, no touchdowns and five picks.

Since a 28-17 home win over West Springfield, South County has scored 23 points in four games (1-3). Stallion senior running back David Jordan carried 19 times for 90 yards and three scores in that win over the Spartans.

Since, South County broke 70 team rushing yards once — its only win — and averaged a combined 2.55 yards per attempt.

It is 0-4 when rushing for less than 3.0 yards per carry. It’s 6-0 when rushing for more.

The Stallions have never won seven games in their five-year history, but have won six games four times.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, are on fire.

After a 21-point, home loss to top-seeded Woodson in Week 5, the Westfield is 5-0, tied for second-longest current winning streak in the region.

The defense held all five Concorde opponents to 14 points or fewer in regulation and, in that span, senior quarterback Danny Fenyak completed 61-of-96 passes for 575 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions.

That’s 63.5-percent completions.

The ball will be wet, giving an edge to the Stallion secondary. But that whatever turnovers that unit forces must be turned into points.

Field possession is always vital, but it’s even more critical given the strength of these two defenses.

Westfield won all three all-time meetings with South County, winning the only playoff game, 40-13, en route to the state title in 2007.

Football: W.T. Woodson 35, South County 0

The Cavaliers are officially okay with their offseason move to the Patriot District.

And they have a banner to prove it.

Woodson clinched a share of the district championship with its 35-0 home win over South County Friday.

The Stallions entered with the top-ranked scoring defense in Division 6.

“It’s been a lot of fun. We expected a lot coming back with all of our seniors,” said Cavalier senior quarterback Connor Reilly, who threw for a score and ran for two more. “We came out tonight and proved that we are the best in the district.”

Added fourth-year coach Trey Taylor: “It was a tough road. We had a lot of close games and a lot of tough opponents.”

The road — at least to the end zone — was a little shorter Friday.

The first four Woodson scoring drives began in South County territory, including three in the first 12 minutes, 4 seconds.

Before the one-minute mark of the second quarter, the Cavaliers scored 14 points off turnovers and held the Stallions to 0-for-4 passing, 43 total yards of offense and three first downs.

Woodson also turned a second-half interception by senior Colin Dempsey into points.

“We knew that how we’ll start the game is how we’ll be able to keep up the pace,” senior defensive lineman Patrick Bulger said. “We knew that if we came out fired-up, we’d be able to maintain that throughout the game.”

Added Taylor, 26-15 all-time: “[South County] has a great defense. Those turnovers were a pivotal part of what we were able to do.

“That’s one thing we harp on as an offense, not turning the ball over and giving people short fields. That definitely helped us tonight.”

The Stallions’ loss does not affect their first-round playoff opponent, only where the game will be played. Had it won Friday, South County could not have overtaken Lake Braddock as the No. 3 seed in Division 6.

But it forces them to face Westfield on the road November 13. All-time, the Bulldogs are 6-1 in first-round playoff games.

Woodson, meanwhile, clinched the top spot in Division 6. Should the Cavaliers continue to advance, they would not play away from Pat Cunningham Stadium until the state semifinal.

Though no player would look that beyond Oakton (5-5), its first-round opponent, Woodson’s coach admitted there is an advantage to familiar surroundings, especially in a season that brought a handful of new venues.

“I think the kids play well here. I think the kids like playing here,” said Taylor, whose Cavaliers hold an eight-game home winning streak. “We’ve got great fans. We’ve great a facility, so it is nice, especially being new in the Patriot this year, every school we went to was pretty much a new adventure.

“Being able to settle down here is good for us.”
