Varsity Baseball: West Springfield 10, South County 0

By Greg Young
Annandale High School Student, DigitalSports Intern

If there was one moment that best represented West Springfield’s 10-0 win over visiting South County on Tuesday, it came in the fourth inning. With West Springfield already holding a 6-0 lead and runners on the corners, the Spartans decided to take a gamble, letting their runner at first, senior Tim Baldwin, get intentionally caught in a run-down.

Like almost everything else the Spartans did that night against the Stallions, the play worked brilliantly. Baldwin was able to delay getting tagged out until the runner that had been on third base, senior Jeff Haeuptle, had already scored.

“Getting that run was really critical,” West Springfield Coach John James said.

Offensively, the Spartans were dominant throughout the game, held without a run in only two innings while otherwise averaging 2 4-runs each at-bat. In the third inning, West Springfield got back-to-back RBI doubles from junior Bryn Renner and sophomore Charlie Morgan and a two-run home run from junior Tucker Tobin. All of their RBIs in the third came with two outs.

“I figured that he’d try to come at me with the second pitch,” Tobin said. “The pitch was low and in, and I was able to square on it.

“We finally busted out as an offense tonight. Everyone hit the ball well.”

In addition to the offense, the Spartans was also led by a one-hit effort from junior pitcher Mike Kent. Kent shined against the Stallions, recording 10 strike outs with no walks. South County’s lone hit was a harmless single from Brent Frazier in the fourth.

“I hit my spots well and my pitching coach put everything together today,” Kent said. “I usually have a lot of movement, but tonight I really threw great pitches.”

For the Spartans, the win propelled them into second place in the Patriot District standings. If the Spartans defeat Annandale on Friday they will clinch the second seed in the upcoming district tournament, earning them a critical first-round bye and an automatic berth in the upcoming Regional tournament. West Springfield defeated Annandale, 5-0, earlier in this season.

“It was a game we had to have,” James said. “It was a big game in terms of seeding, but we still have business we need to take care of against Annandale.”

The loss, meanwhile, drops South County to 11-7 overall (9-4 in the Patriot District) and into third place in the league standings. The Stallions can still tie the Spartans for second place if they defeat Hayfield on Friday and the Spartans fall to the Atoms.

For the West Springfield, the 10-0 win on their Senior Night was a great send-off for their five seniors.

“It worked out well,” James said. “A lot of the team knows the players on South County, so it was a nice way for them to go out.”

Baseball: T.C. Williams 10, No. 5 South County 6

By Phil Murphy

**Check below the story for highlights from Friday’s game. Re-live the game in 12 minutes, 13 seconds below.**

South County pitchers held T.C. Williams’ lead-off and clean-up hitters to a combined 1-for-9 at the plate, the Titans’ starting pitcher gave up six runs, including four on a grand slam, and T.C. Williams still managed to claim a 10-6 road victory on Friday.

“If you told me that [would happen], it would have been difficult,” said Titans coach Scott Grossi, winner of six of seven games. “But I have faith in everybody – everybody in the lineup, 1 through 14. I feel like I can put anybody in there and they’ll get the job done.

“Even if those guys have bad days, other guys have to pick it up. That’s they did tonight.”

After being held to two hits and no runs through four innings, the Titans erupted for six in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run home run by starting pitcher Tim Mannel, his first of the year.

T.C. Williams entered the game having recorded double-digit run totals in five of the previous six games.

“We haven’t beaten South County in two years,” Mannel said. “The last time we beat them, a kid dropped a fly ball. It feels good to beat them fair and square.”

But Mannel’s contribution was not limited to offense. The senior hurled a 120-pitch complete game, recording six strikeouts and overcoming three fielding errors behind him.

“He has been pitching well all year as you saw tonight,” Grossi said. “He’s been hitting well the whole year. I guess he figured he just wanted to get it done himself.

“He sparked the team with a home run to get it going. On the mound, he had 120 pitches. For some people that may be way too much, but for a kid like that – he’s got a great build and he’s a workhorse on the mound.”

Added Mannel: “Right now, [my arm] feels fine. Tomorrow, we’ll see.”

T.C. Williams sophomore Matt Kilby provided some additional breathing room the next inning with a two-run home run that soared over the 355-foot mark in left-center field.

“Going into that at-bat, I was 1-for-3 on the day,” he said. “I was just trying to find a fastball to hit… I swung hard and it worked.”

With the score 10-2 in favor of the Titans – and Mannel’s pitch count just over the century mark – Stallion third baseman Seth Jordan came to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. The junior hit a 1-1 pitch over the wall in straight-away center for his second grand slam in seven days, abruptly cutting the T.C. Williams lead in half.

“He’s just a heck of a player. He might be the best player in the district,” said South County coach Mark Luther, who has coached in the Patriot District since 1994. “He just relaxes and swings it. He’s strong, he works at it and he’s just having a great season.

“At 10-2, it’s just step up and see what you can do. There happened to be three guys in front of him and he hit the thing. That ball was gone from the minute he hit it. He’s having nice season and he’s a great kid. I’m happy for him.”

Stallion starting pitcher Brennan Miller exhibited extreme control before being pulled just nine pitches after allowing the home run to Mannel. The junior lefty struck out five and threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of the 23 batters he faced.

“He was throwing the ball very well to start,” said Luther, who had won five of six games entering Senior Night on Friday. “He was throwing his slider very well and was throwing his fastball where he wanted to tonight, as well. That went into the fifth until he hung one on the inside, I don’t know if he got a little rattled at that point, but… they end up putting a six spot on us.

“[T.C. Williams is] a great team; they’re playing very well. Scott [Grossi] is a great guy and a good friend and he’s taking one from my playbook that you play well at the right time… They’re obviously playing well at the right time.”

Girls’ Soccer: South County 1, Lake Braddock 0

By Angela Watts

** Look below the story to find a video player filled with dozens of highlights from Friday’s game. **

The Lake Braddock girls’ soccer team that took the field Friday at South County isn’t the same as the one that captured its fifth Virginia AAA state championship last season. The 2008 Bruins boast only three seniors on their roster.

But it is still Lake Braddock.

And South County, despite being only three years old, has become one of its biggest rivals. The Bruins got the best of the Stallions twice last season. This year’s meeting, though, was notably different.

South County controlled the ball nearly the entire game, registering a 1-0 victory that could — had it not been for the efforts of Lake Braddock junior goal keeper Caitlin Landsman — have been much more pronounced.

With the win, the Stallions (9-0-2, 5-0-1 Patriot) move into sole possession of first place in the Patriot District with only one regular-season game remaining against Hayfield on Tuesday. The Bruins (6-4, 5-1) host Lee, also on Tuesday.

“I’m very proud of them,” South County Coach Maureen Salle said. “I knew they were capable of it … but lately we’ve just been a little scared in the first half. But I knew in pre-game that it was going to be a good game, just because they were relaxed and they were confident.

“I think with Lake Braddock, it’s such a rival — even in the three years that we’ve been open — that they were just a little bit more hesitant with their shots.”

Locked in a scoreless tie at the end of the first half, the host Stallions finally got on the board in the 46th minute, when junior midfielder Paige Ritari — a significant presence all night — found sophomore midfielder Morgan Duffy open in front of the net.

Duffy said she actually lost sight of the pass as it neared her, but she still managed to jump the ball and hit it squarely enough with the back of her left foot. It sailed past a diving Landsman into the corner of the net.

The goal marked Duffy’s fifth of the season, and Ritari’s sixth assist.

“I almost lost track of the ball and I didn’t even know what I was doing, so when it went in it was like, ‘Wow,'” Duffy said. “But I had talked to Paige in the beginning and then again and half time and I told her that I’d be there for the service. I love playing with her.”
