Baseball: No. 1 West Springfield 4, No. 6 South County 3

Before their pivotal Patriot District game with the Stallions, Spartans’ coach John James handed the ball to his ace, junior left-hander Bobby Wahl, hoping for a dominating performance.

Minutes after the game, James gave Wahl the game ball again — he just had to have team manager Chaz Pratt track it down first.

On the third pitch of the bottom of the seventh inning, Wahl lined a one-one pitch over the left-centerfield wall for a walk-off, solo home run as No. 1 West Springfield beat No. 6 South County, 4-3, on Saturday.

“It was low, I thought it was just a gapper,” said James, whose team is 7-0 in district games this year. “That would’ve been great, too. A lead-off double would’ve helped us out a lot. But he’s a strong kid and it carried out. I didn’t think it was going, I was ready to stop him at second.

“But, hey, I’m glad. I’ll take the four bases over the two any time.”

Added Wahl, who also threw a complete game, striking out 11 batters and walking one: “At first, it was questionable, but I saw it kept rising. Then I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s going out.’

“After giving up three runs to South County, I wanted to finish it off and I did.”

Wahl’s game-ending shot was the only clutch hit of the day for West Springfield.

Two of its three remaining runs came on a home run by senior Bryn Renner with no outs in the third inning and sophomore Bubba Self on first base. And it was Self who scored on a passed ball in the first inning to open the Spartan scoring.

With runners in scoring position, Stallion starter Brennan Miller held the home team to 1-for-10 hitting with no runs batted in and five strike outs.

“We left about a million guys on base,” James said. “I don’t know what it was. We talk about the approach with guys in scoring position all the time. He just made some good pitches. You’ve got to hand it to him.

“When runners were on base, he did a good job of keeping us off-balance and keeping us from putting it in play.”

Added fourth-year South County coach Mark Luther, the only coach in program history: ‘It’s just what we talk about. We put a sign on the door that says, ‘Wanted: Competitors.’ That’s what our guys need to be … No matter how talented we are, we’re going to show up every single day and compete every pitch.”

Fortunately, for the Stallions, they showed up twice on Saturday.

Just hours after its loss to West Springfield — and its fourth game in only three days — South County hosted WCAC team Bishop Ireton back in Lorton.

Luther stressed confidence in the depth of his pitching staff and hinted at some line-up changes before the night cap with the Cardinals.

Most critically, though, the twin bill gives the Stallions a chance to quickly erase the walk-off loss and rebound before they return to district play on Monday at Annandale.

“That’s the greatest part of this game,” Luther said. “No other game does it. We play all the time. The best thing is you get to forget about what happened and you get to play it again.

“That’s why we play this game, that’s why it’s so much fun.”

Boys’ Soccer: South County 1, West Potomac 0

Story By Jeffery Gibert

A penalty kick by Stallion senior Ricky Cole was all that was needed to push South County to a 1-0 victory over West Potomac. In the win, Stallion junior goalkeeper Javier Hernandez recorded his seventh clean sheet in eight games this year.

“He’s the best goalie in the region,” senior Max Kleess said.

“If not the country,” senior Zach Wilner chimed in.

The Stallions grabbed a hold of the tempo very early on, almost constantly on the attack in the first half. But West Potomac defenders — sophomore Fifi Atta-Otoo and senior Freddy Boateng — used blazing speed to run down South County attackers time after time.

Even when the Stallions would get a great scoring opportunity, they could not capitalize. Kleess just barely missed on multiple shots.

“Normally, we’re a pretty good finishing team, but today we just couldn’t put it in the back of the net,” Kleess said. “Those days kind of happen.”

A lot of Kleess’ chances were set up by marvelous passes by sophomore Zach Crandall.

“Pressure situations are where you do best,” Crandall said. “You get the most out of them.”

In the 38th minute, South County got the golden opportunity that it was waiting for all game.

A hand ball was called on a West Potomac defender in the penalty box. Cole made the most of his penalty kick, giving his team what proved the deciding score of the game.

“[I was thinking] just hopefully I score and that it goes in, I guess,” Cole said. “Just make the PK.”

Things got a little chippy in the second half.

Neither team wanted to make a mistake which upped the level of intensity. Junior Kyle Wilson played really huge for the Wolverines, putting moves on many Stallion defenders, but could not muscle his team to an equalizer.

Meanwhile, Wilner and Cole kept pushing for a two-goal cushion, but West Potomac senior goalkeeper Orlando Nares was sensational in net.

Aside from the penalty kick which is tough for any goalkeeper, Nares stopped anything and everything in sight, which kept the game close.

“As the game went on, we got our composure, started passing it around a little bit, and kept the ball for most of the game, and came out with a win,” Wilner said. “We’re happy with it.”

On Monday, West Potomac will look to bounce back in a home game against Lake Braddock, while South County will look to continue rolling on the road at West Springfield.

“We have a hard schedule ahead of us,” senior Jasper Dendy said. “But I think we can come out victorious.”

D.C. Beltway Area: Girls’ Soccer Top 10

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 14, 2 p.m

1. Robinson (5-0-1)
The
Rams were 21-1-0 last season en route to capturing the Virginia AAA
state title and returned nine starters from that team. Robinson has
outscored its opponents 17-4 this season and only has a 2-2 road draw
with No. 2 W.T. Woodson keeping it from perfection. It faces No. 3
Chantilly on Friday.
2. W.T. Woodson (5-0-1)
The Cavaliers only graduated four players from last year’s team that went 12-3-2, but are without Florida State-bound senior Niki Mercier,
who will miss the season with a knee injury. Woodson tied No. 1
Robinson, 2-2, on April 1 — no fooling — and has a marquee match with
No. 6 McLean on April 21.
3. Chantilly (5-0-1)
The
Chargers have outscored their opponents 20-2 this season, but 16 of
those goals came in the first three games. Chantilly faces No. 1
Robinson on the road on Friday.
4. Broad Run (5-0-1)
The Spartans went 24-0-0 last season en route to the Virginia AA State title and have five college signees: Holly King (Florida), Valerie Powell (Arkansas), Kelly Evans (Old Dominion), Caitlin Hunter (UNC-Wilmington) and Taylor Starr (Tusculum). Broad Run has outscored its opponents 14-2 this year.
5. Loudoun Valley (6-0-0)
The Vikings have torched their first six opponents, winning by a combined 23-1 margin.
6. McLean (6-0-0)
The
Highlanders have posted a Northern Region-best 30 goals this season,
while allowing just six, but a 15-0 season-opening win at Wakefield
skews that statistic. McLean faces South Lakes and Jefferson this week
before squaring off with No. 2 Woodson on April 21.
7. Oakton (5-0-0)
No
team has gotten within three goals of the Cougars this season as they
have outscored their opponents by a collective 28-2. Oakton closes its
season with four consecutive games teams either in the Top 10 or those
that also received votes.
8. Woodbridge (3-2-1)
The
Vikings knocked off defending state runner-up Battlefield, 4-0, earlier
this season, but fell to defending state champion No. 1 Robinson, 4-1,
on March 16. Woodbridge plays Potomac (Va.) and Forest Park this week.
9. West Springfield (5-1-1)
The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won five consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw with Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 13-0.
10. Washington-Lee (6-1-0)
The
Generals have marched out to a surprising start with amazing defense,
allowing only six goals through seven goals. But three of those allowed
came in a 3-0 loss to No. 9 West Springfield on March 25.

D.C. Beltway Area: Boys’ Soccer Top 10

Boys’ Soccer Top 10
*Rankings and records as of April 14, 2 p.m

1. Osbourn Park (6-0-0)
The Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 21-2 this season, including a 3-1 win over No. 8 Osbourn (April 1) and a 3-0 win over No. 6 Woodbridge (March 25). Osbourn Park hosts No. 3 Battlefield on Friday.
2. Robinson (4-1-1)
The Rams are the defending Virginia AAA State runners up and return both goalkeeper Samir Badr from a year-long stint at the U.S. National Team academy in Bradenton, Fl, and midfielder Connor Alexander from a back injury that cost him the entirety of last season. Robinson beat No. 4 Westfield, 3-1 on the road, on March 27.
3. Battlefield (5-0-0)
The Bobcats have outscored their opponents 16-4 this year, including a 2-1 win over No. 8 Osbourn (March 20). A marquee road match-up with No. 1 Osbourn Park looms this Friday.
4. Westfield (6-1-0)
The only Bulldog blemish is a 3-1 home loss to No. 2 Robinson. Westfield is the highest scoring team in the D.C. area, having posted 32 goals in its seven games, and its next three opponents have a combined five wins.
5. Edison (6-0-1)
The Eagles drew, 2-2, with No. 6 Woodbridge over Spring Break and have the second-highest goals per game average in the Northern Region. Edison faces a 16-day lay-off between matches, though, with its next game not until April 22 against Falls Church.
6. Woodbridge (3-1-1)
In its five games, the Vikings have faced three Top 10 teams: No. 1 Osbourn Park (3-0 loss), No. 5 Edison (2-2 tie) and No. 10 Park View (4-1 win). Woodbridge travels to Forest Park on Friday.
7. Wakefield (7-0-1)
Since a 3-3 draw with T.C. Williams on March 18, the Warriors have won five games in a row. Wakefield features Ethiopian attacking midfielder Iyassu Bekele and will face No. 5 Edison on April 24.
8. Osbourn (5-2-0)
Against teams outside of the top three-ranked teams, the Eagles are 5-0-0 and have outscored opponents 21-2. Osbourn’s pair of losses to Osbourn Park, 3-1, and Battlefield, 2-1, are its only two blemishes. The Eagles have a rematch with Bobcats on April 21.
9. McLean (4-2-0)
The Highlanders’ two losses are to No. 4 Westfield, 5-2 on March 23, and No. 7 Wakefield, 4-2 on March 12. McLean faces South Lakes and W.T. Woodson in the coming week before a pivotal Liberty District match at Langley on April 23.
10. Park View (4-2-1)
The Patriots feature junior super striker K.C. Onyeador, who may be the best pure goal-scorer in the Washington, D.C. area. Park View has 12 goals in its last four games (3-1-0), but is 0-2-0 against teams in the Top 10.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Langley (4-1-1)

Softball: South County 6, Yorktown 4

By Phil Murphy
Senior Multimedia/Content Editor
Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area

**Click the links at the top-left, above the video interview with Chelsey Dunham, for complete video and photo coverage from the game.**

In her previous two games against Northern Region opponents, South County pitcher Chelsey Dunham was untouchable, hurling a no-hitter and perfect game in back-to-back outings against Patriot District teams.

But through two innings against Yorktown on Monday, the junior ace seemed human.

She gave up a first-inning solo homer to Patriot 3B Emily Panyard and four second-inning hits that led to a pair of runs.

From the third inning on, though, Dunham was lights-out, striking out eight of 11 batters in one stretch, as the Stallions rolled to a 6-4 win over the Patriots in Arlington.

“She wasn’t rattled,” South County coach Al Thompson said. “We just came back from a winning streak down in Myrtle Beach where we played some really tough teams. And she plays travel ball, she doesn’t come into every game thinking she’s going to get a no-hitter.

“She doesn’t really get rattled, she just has to find her groove.”

Added Dunham, who struck out 13 batters, while walking just one: “I just got warm. I didn’t get as much warm-up time as I normally get before games. And I found the umpire’s zone, where he likes it.”

South County (10-1) found its stroke soon after Dunham.

After the Patriots jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, the Stallions put up a six-spot in the top of the third. They used five hits and three Yorktown errors to turn a three-run deficit into an instant three-run lead.

Outside of the third inning, South County managed no runs and only four hits. Still, with Dunham in the pitching circle, the six-run inning held up, propelling the Stallions to their first-ever win over the Patriots (5-1).

“We’ve lost to them to the past two years,” said Dunham, who hit an RBI single in the decisive third inning. “This was definitely a team win. We had that one ****** inning with all of our hits, so it’s amazing.”
