Baseball: Patriot District Championship

Patriot District Baseball Final
West Springfield Defeats South County in the 16th inning 4-3

The Spartans dealt all
three of their aces — starting pitcher Bobby Wahl, middle reliever
Mike Kent and closer Richie McMahon — in the hard-fought, 4-3 win over the Stallions in 16 innings in the Patriot District final.

The game, which
began on Monday, was suspended well after 11 p.m. in the 14th
inning deadlocked at 3-3. It was resumed Tuesday and ended in bottom of
the 16th inning on a squeeze play with sophomore Trevor Snook squeezing junior Charlie Morgan across for the winning run.  Senior left-hander
McMahon was the winning pitcher, throwing two shutout innings
tonight with three strikeouts, allowing no runs, no hits and no base runners.

West Springfield will face Washington-Lee in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament at home on Friday at 7 p.m. South County will host Edison.

Playoff Softball: No. 3 South County 1, Annandale 0

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links to the left to to access hundreds of photos and dozens of video highlights from Monday’s championship game!

Laughter was found in abundance Monday night on the softball field at Lake Braddock.

From South County’s pre-game stories to its post-game picture posing — with a few priceless moments on the field sprinkled in, too — the Stallions seemed to be having a ball throughout their 1-0 victory over Annandale in the Patriot District tournament championship game.

But then, why shouldn’t they?

South County (22-1 overall) entered Monday’s championship game riding a 16-game win streak, and emerged with its third consecutive Patriot District tournament championship.

“Three in a row … I don’t think anyone else could ask for anything more,” senior first baseman Kayla Reisinger said. “We did great. I mean, you can’t do anything else.”

Certainly not on the district level. And while the Stallions as a team made it clear their sights are set on reaching the state tournament this season, there was the business of winning the league tournament title first.

In doing so, South County will enter the upcoming Northern Region tournament as the No. 1 seed from the Patriot District and will host National District No. 4 seed Washington-Lee at 7 p.m. Friday in the opening round.

Annandale (11-10) will advance as the Patriot’s No. 2 seed and will similarly host National District No. 3 seed Mount Vernon at 7 p.m. Friday.

“I’m very proud of how far we’ve come,” said Annandale Coach Tom Grant, whose team came in riding a six-game win streak. “The last few weeks have been a total turnaround. We started the year 0-6 and we were struggling. But then something just clicked.

“We kept telling them they were much better than they were showing on the field … and they dug down deep and started playing the kind of ball we knew they could play.”

But Monday night the Atoms ran into the buzzsaw that it South County junior pitcher Chelsey Dunham. Dunham nearly threw a perfect game, yielding only one hit and one walk while striking out 13 of the 23 batters she faced, including striking out the side in the second inning.

She was sitting batters down so quickly that after just a pair of strikeouts in the top of the fifth inning Dunham started jogging off the field — which ignited the rest of the Stallions’ in laughter all over again.

Annandale sophomore Isabelle Yaroch was impressive as well, striking out six batter while yielding only two hits and one walk. Unfortunately for Yaroch, those hits both came in the first inning.

South County sophomore right fielder Julia Kastner led things off with a infield single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior designated player Sarah Senseney. Stallion junior second baseman Taylor Dillow then promptly belted a double to deep center field to score the game’s only run.

And even one run — with Dunham on the mound — is often enough. Of the Stallions’ 22 victories this season, 16 have been shutouts.

“She’s such a good pitcher,” Grant said of Dunham. “She moves that
ball in-and-out and in-and-out … we just couldn’t get to it. She’s a
very smart pitcher.”

Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Man on a Miscione — As part of his hat trick in Stone Bridge’s 3-0, Liberty District semifinal win over Langley, Bulldog junior Mikey Herndon finsihes on a one-hop assist from senior goalkeeper Matt Miscione. Herndon is tied for the all-time single-season goal record with 14 this year.
Vieira Game-Winning 10-Pitch AB — Potomac sophomore Kyle Vieira battled through a 10-pitch at-bat before stroking this game-winning base hit against Woodbridge to break a 3-3 tie. More from this game in the countdown.
Denson Caps Complete-Game Two-Hitter — Dominion senior Jessie Denson caps the complete-game, two-hitter against Potomac Falls as the Titans defeat the third-ranked Panthers, 1-0. Denson struck out 12 batters in the win.
Monster Moosh — South County senior Mojtaba Amin equalizes against upstart Hayfield in the 73rd minute on this diving header from a free kick by senior Willie Roque. Six minutes later, Stallion senior Max Kleess netted the game-winning goal to lift South County to its first-ever Patriot District title.
Rogers’ Neighborhood — In the girls soccer Dulles District quarterfinal, No. 3 Potomac Falls
was in danger of falling to No. 6 Freedom, trailing 1-0, when Jenna
Marzin
tied it with in the 78th minute. Then, after a scoreless 10-minute
overtime, they went to sudden death and Mary Shea Rogers wins a
scramble in front of the net after a long throw-in … Golden Goal!
Brant, No Soup for You! — DeMatha senior goalie Ryan Brant made one save, but was caught out-of-position for the follow up shot. But no matter, he flies across the
goal to make a sprawling save to keep the Stags in the WCAC final. DeMatha came from behind to beat St. Mary’s Ryken, 9-7.
Lechner to Lechner Winner — Good Counsel junior Shannon Lechner passes to sophomore
sister Kelly Lechner, who takes a couple steps and scores the
game-winning goal with :20.4 seconds left in a second overtime to beat
Bishop Ireton, 12-11, for the WCAC championship. It’s Good Counsel’s
sixth-straight WCAC crown.

No. 10 –Tony Tushy
Prince George’s County, Maryland
— Bowie senior pitcher Tony Cerverizzo allowed four first-inning runs to High Point in the 4A South regional final, but retired the next 15 batters in order, including this one from his backside. The Bulldogs beat the Eagles, 13-5, to clinch a berth in the state tournament.

No. 9 –Full Nelson    1    2
Prince William County, Virginia
— Osbourn junior Nelson Almendares scored twice — in the 61st and 83rd minutes — to lift his club to a win over Osbourn Park, 2-1, on Monday. It was the Eagles’ first win in the series in five years and the Yellow Jackets’ first loss of the season.

No. 8 — Waiz F8
Northern Region, Virginia
— In the first game of the Liberty District semifinal doubleheader, Woodson CF Max Waizenegger lays out, face-first, to rob Stone Bridge 2B Spencer Rositano of a base hit. But Bulldog starting pitcher — and District Player of the Year — Johnny Bladel dominated on the mound, and Stone Bridge won, 4-3, on Saturday to advance to the league title game.

No. 7 –Collins Plucks Ricochet

Independent Schools, Maryland
— In the IAC title game, Georgetown Prep attackman Brian Casey is stuck behind the Landon cage with a defender shadowing him. But he dodges to find an opening and fire a wrap-around shot that ricochets off the post. Hoya senior Matt Collins grabs the ball out of the sky and fires it past the Bear goalkeeper, as Prep wins the IAC tournament, 11-3.

No. 6 –I Wish that I Had Jessie’s Goal
Northern Region, Virginia
In late April, West Springfield beat South County, 8-0. In the Patriot District championship on Friday, there was only one Spartan goal, but it was pretty impressive. West Springfield senior Jessie Gonzalez scored on a 41-yard free kick in the 33rd minute to lift the Spartans to their third-consecutive district title.

No. 5Begleys Can’t Be Choosers
Montgomery County, Maryland — Sherwood sophomore Michael Begley dove around the Wootton goalkeeper for one of his four goals in the 4A West Region final and finishes it with a partial, on-the-ground handstand. More coming from this game … next.

No. 4 –Jutkowitz Through Wickets
Montgomery County, Maryland — Patriot senior Mark Jutkowitz — committed to the University of Maryland — sweeps a smooth, between-the-legs pass to faceoff man Michael Brailovsky for a goal in Wootton’s 13-9 win over Sherwood for its fourth-straight regional championship.

No. 3 –PW Defensive Trio    1    2    3
Prince William County, Virginia
— In three of a handful of outstanding defensive plays that littered this late regular-season game between Woodbridge and Potomac, arm strength was evidenced in the outs available at the link on the title. Panther LF Tyler Covington, C Edgar Quinones and Viking RF Michael Lott made the highlight, but there were several more worthy defensive plays in Potomac’s 4-3 win.

No. 2 –Savage Ending
W.C.A.C., Maryland
— The WCAC championship between Paul VI and Bishop Ireton began at Boyie Baysox Stadium on Monday, but was postponed through five innings due to rain. It was continued on Wednesday at Annandale and ended in style. With one out, trailing by a run and the go-ahead run on second base in the bottom of the seventh inning, Cardinal pinch hitter Brian Lewis hit what, at first, appeared to be a walk-off single. But Panther shortstop Dan Savage made a leaping catch to rob Lewis, then stomped on second base for the unassisted, game-ending — league-winning — double play.

No. 1 — Perfection Squared
Mitchell 0.07

S.M.A.C., Maryland — McDonough senior Melanie Mitchell pitched her third perfect game of the season — this time against Hammond in the 2A South semifinals. Mitchell struck out 17 Golden Bears, who were ranked No. 6 in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area. Mitchell and the Rams have surrendered only one
run all season, coming to La Plata in a 2-1, extra-inning game. McDonough will play Easton in the 2A state semifinals at Bachman Park
in Glen Burnie on Tuesday.

Hoover Perfect Game
Northern Region, Virginia
— Westfield sophomore Aaron Hoover threw a perfect game against Centreville in the Concorde District semifinals in the top-ranked Bulldogs’ 3-0 win on Friday. Hoover struck out four Wildcats, forced 11 to ground out, six to fly out and only let three batters reach three-ball counts. All that only required 63 pitches — three per batter — to complete as Westfield advanced to the district championship game.

Boys’ Playoff Soccer: Patriot District Championship

The head referee blew his whistle three times to signify full time. But, before the first blare was complete, Stallion senior Max Kleess was running.

And No. 6 South County was chasing.

Kleess lasted almost 30 seconds before succumbing to the pressure.

“I just knew I was going to get tackled and I was going to be at the bottom of a pile, probably in pain,” he said. “I was just trying to get away from them.

“But they’re persistent.”

That persistence was evidenced in the Patriot District title game.

Regular-season district champion South County trailed seventh-seeded Hayfield for the majority of the match, but scored twice in the final eight minutes, including Kleess’ 79th-minute game-winner, to capture its first-ever boys’ soccer title, 2-1, on Friday.

And seconds after the Stallions caught Kleess, they turned their focus to their district player of the year, goalkeeper Javier Hernandez.

“Once I saw them go for Max, they all started to crowd,” said Hernandez, who has 10 clean sheets this year. “I was already on the ground. I was already excited, my teammates were holding me and I just took it in. And I loved it, man.”

The celebration was as much out of elation as it was relief.

The Hawks took the lead in the 15th minute on an opportunistic goal by junior Jamie Kanashiro. And, for the duration of play, Hayfield and South County had comparable possession and neither side dominated scoring chances.

This is the same Hayfield club that went 2-11 last year, 0-7 in the Patriot District, and was 4-8-1 in the regular season this season, with a 2-4-1 district record.

But it came together in the playoffs under the energetic leadership of fourth-year coach Dan Drickey, the utter dominance of senior defender Lolo Newsome and the reliable play upfront by Juan Grande and Freddy Bonilla.

On Friday, though, heavily-favored South County equalized in the 73rd minute, proving the too-good-to-be-true ending to be just that.

Stallion senior central midfielder Willie Roque set up a free kick 30 yards from goal on the far sideline and — after a brief hesitation, atypical of trailing team — played a perfectly-weighted ball to the far post, where senior defender Mojtaba Amin was waiting.

With a diving finish and a running, screaming, jersey-pulling celebration by the bench, the score — and momentum — tangibly swung towards South County.

“At the free kick, I was all the way back here playing defense. Usually, I go in for the free kicks,” said Amin, a club player for PWSI Courage ’91. “I feel like I want the ball more than anyone else, so I go up in the air for it. And Willie was about to take the free kick and I told him to hold it so I could get in there and get the goal.

“The ball was placed perfectly on my head and I just placed it in the back corner … After it hit my head, I just laid on the ground and I heard everyone go crazy. I don’t even remember the celebration after that at all.”

A similar, louder eruption took place only seven minutes later.

Sensing that the Hawk bubble had burst with Amin’s equalizer, Stallion senior midfielder Matt Karwel slipped a through-ball between the teeth of the defense and to the foot of Kleess.

Kleess took one touch and toe-poked a shot off the fingertips of Hayfield goalkeeper Fernando Seas, stretching the net and lifting South County to the district championship.

Kleess, though, took his excitement one step — and six lanes — further, as he and his teammates spilled onto the surrounding track at Lake Braddock and up against the fence, where screaming fans celebrated only feet away.

“I can’t really explain what happened,” said Kleess, headed to Duquesne to play collegiate soccer. “I remember scoring — I couldn’t really believe it went in. But I remember running to the sideline and everyone just swarmed on me.

“It feels too good to be true. But thank God it is true.”

Girls’ Playoff Soccer: Patriot District Championship

By Phil Murphy
Senior Multimedia/Content Editor
Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area

*Click the links above for complete video and photo galleries from the game!*

Spartan coach J.T. Alukonis doesn’t need any reminders of the program’s historic success, they’re nailed — literally — to his workplace.

Five state championships — which equal Robinson for the VHSL all-time best — are posted in black lettering on the front entrance of West Springfield.

Fortunately, though, the first-year coach drives into the school on the north side of Rolling Road.

“I’m lucky with the way I turn into the parking lot,” he said “We’ve got three or four state championships up on the front of the school. I turn in a different way, so I don’t have to see that everyday.”

With him at the helm, though, maybe those reminders might grow more-friendly, as the Spartan tradition shows no signs of diminishing.

Fourth-ranked West Springfield won its third-consecutive Patriot District championship on Friday night, beating South County, 1-0, at Lake Braddock.

“Every day, there’s somebody — whether it’s going down to the athletic office and seeing the plaques and district championships, whether it’s the girls reminding me or somebody else reminding me,” said Alukonis, who accepted the job in November. “It’s an honor, really, to be able to coach team that’s been so successful in the past and into now.”

Added Spartan captain Jessie Gonzalez: “[It’s] legacy. We get along really well as a team. I think that helps a lot with how we play on the field. It was our goal at the beginning of the season to win districts, and we did it.

“Now it’s to go past the second round of regionals.”

While a berth in the Northern Region semifinals as a specific objective may appear a long shot, those seem to be Gonzalez’s specialty.

The senior midfielder sent a free kick 41 yards into the top shelf of the goal — her 13th of the season and the game’s only score — in the 33rd minute.

And, according to Alukonis, she scored in very similar fashion in the first meeting between the teams on April 22.

“Jessie knows that, pretty much anywhere on the field, if she thinks she has a look at goal, then go ahead can take it,” Alukonis said. “When she’s serving a ball into the box — whether it’s on goal, she’s shooting on goal or hitting something for someone to run onto — I couldn’t tell you if she was trying to score.

“I’ll take it either way … With Jessie Gonzalez, nothing shocks me anymore. She’s a heck of a player.”

Admitted Gonzalez, with a laugh: “I was going for goal, but I was going back post. I hit it a little harder than I thought I was going to. But it feels good.”

Friday night’s district final win was a far cry from the first meeting between West Springfield and South County.

At that point in the year, the Stallions had allowed one goal in their previous five games — three wins and two ties — and stood a half-game behind the Spartans for first place in the Patriot District.

But West Springfield traveled to Lorton and thumped South County, 8-0, getting two goals from district player of the year Amalya Clayton, two from Rachel Mares, two from Julia Stejskal and two from Gonzalez.

“They had a lot to prove this game, South County did,” said Alukonis, whose team has outscored opponents 49-4 this season. “They wanted to come out and show what happened last time wasn’t their real team. The first time we played them, they were a little bit off and, frankly, we had the best game of our season.”

Added Gonzalez, a club player for SYC Speed ’91: “Coming from an 8-0 win and then not scoring for 30 minutes was really frustrating.”

That midseason win was also the seventh of what proved to be nine consecutive shutouts. The Spartans have 13 overall this year.

While first-team all-district goalkeeper Beth Anne Nowak has spent a good portion of those patrolling the defensive third of the field in boredom, she was called on several times on Friday.

She stopped a one-on-one scoring chance by Stallion forward Liz Hodges in 38th minute and followed with a diving stop on a free kick by Alex Reed in the 48th.

“We haven’t asked for a whole lot this season — she had a game, I believe, this Wednesday night where she touched the ball twice,” said Alukonis of Nowak, who is committed to Indiana Wesleyan. “We know that when we need her, she’s going to be there. And she made the saves we expect from her. I see it everyday in practice.

“Even if she doesn’t get to do it in a game, I know she can do it. She’s a tremendous goalkeeper.”

Added Nowak, the starting keeper for all three district titles: “It’s just doing my job. The saves feel great. Don’t get me wrong: I love being part of the game — actually, I like when I don’t have to be part of the game, we can win and I don’t have to be a part of the game.

“But, tonight, I feel like I was out there for a purpose. South County is a quality team — all get-out to Alex Reed and Morgan Duffy. It felt great to be a part of this.”

D.C. Beltway Area: Boys’ Soccer Top 10

Boys’ Soccer Top 10
*Rankings and records as of May 11

1. Westfield (12-1-0) — LW: 3
The
Bulldogs earned the top seed — and a first-round bye — in the Concorde District tournament. That, coupled with four days of rain last week, kept Westfield off the pitch. But its 12-1-0 record stands the best in the DC area and allows it to hop into the top spot. Westfield faces Centreville (5-4-2) in the district semifinals on Wednesday.
2. Osbourn Park (9-1-1) — LW: 1
The
Yellow
Jackets have outscored their opponents 31-5 this season, the fewest goals
allowed among any team in the DigitalSports coverage
area, but they fell to rival Osbourn, 2-1, in their only action this week. Osbourn Park faces No. 4 Battlefield, Loudoun Valley and Fauquier this week.
3. Robinson (10-1-2) — LW: 4
The
Rams beat Fairfax 4-0 in the first round of the Concorde District Tournament after a less-than-stellar 1-0 win over the Rebels in their regular-season final. Robinson faces Cinderella Oakton, the district sixth seed of seven teams in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.
4. Battlefield (10-1-2) — LW: 2
The
Bobcats posted an impressive, 2-1 win over Osbourn last week, but also suffered an inexplicable 3-2 loss to Loudon Valley. Battlefield rebounded with a 2-1 win over Stonewall, but faces No. 2 Osbourn Park before the Cedar Run District Tournament starts on May 18.
5. McLean (9-2-1) — LW: 5
The
Highlanders’
two
losses are to No. 3 Westfield, 5-2
on March 23, and
No. 10 Wakefield, 4-2 on March 12. McLean earned the top seed in the Liberty District Tournament and beat eighth-seeded Marshall, 1-0, in its only game last week. It faces Jefferson, who it beat 1-0 on April 14, in the district semifinals on Wednesday.
6. South County (10-1-1) — LW: 7

The Stallions continues their climb after earning the top seed in the Patriot District Tournament and beating eight-seed T.C. Williams, 7-0, in the tournament opener on Monday. South County faces Annandale (6-5-3) in the district semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Stallions beat the Atoms, 1-0, on March 31.
7. Woodbridge (8-2-3) — LW: 6

The Vikings beat Freedom-Woodbridge, 3-1, in their only game last week. Woodbridge faces Potomac (2-5-1) and C.D. Hylton (1-5-2) before the Cardinal District Tournament starts on May 18.
8. Stone Bridge (11-1-1) — LW: 8
The
Bulldogs
have the third-best scoring defense in the Northern Region (Robinson
and South County) and have an eight-match unbeaten streak. Stone Bridge beat Marshall, 3-1; South Lakes, 2-1; and Woodson, 3-1, last week — the last of which was a first-round playoff game. It faces Langley (8-2-2) in a promising Liberty District semifinal on Wednesday.
9. Wakefield (11-1-2) — LW: 10

The Warriors opened eyes around the Northern Region with their 5-1
dismantling over the previously unbeaten — and previously fifth-ranked
— Eagles on on April 24, and have just recently regained their form. Wakefield beat Herndon, 2-0 on Senior Night, and Hayfield, 1-0, last week. It earned a first-round National District Tournament bye and draws Yorktown (6-6-3) in semifinals on Wednesday. The Warriors are the second-highest scoring team in the Northern Region (Westfield).
10. Gar-Field (6-1-4) — LW: N/A
The Indians had a pair of ties last week with Forest Park, but also beat Freedom-Woodbridge, 3-1. Only a Tuesday-night game with Hylton remains on Gar-Field’s regular-season schedule and it is the top team in the Cardinal District.
