Football: South County at W.T. Woodson Preview

By Phil Murphy

Senior Multimedia/Content Manager, Washington D.C. Metro Area

**Click here for previews from games around the Northern Region in Week 10!!**

South County (6-3, 3-3) at W.T. Woodson (8-1, 5-1)
PowerPoint Ranking: South County – 4th (Div. 6); W.T. Woodson – 1st (Div. 6)
Offensive Rank (ppg in Division): South County – 12th (18.7); W.T. Woodson – 3rd (31.7)
Defensive Rank (ppg in Division): South County – 1st (13.0); W.T. Woodson – 5th (18.0)
Last Week: South County lost to T.C. Williams, 17-10; W.T. Woodson won at Annandale, 42-14

Three weeks ago, this looked like it could be for the outright district title.

Now, the South County is in a four-way tie for third in the district and is a virtual lock to face Westfield in the first round of the regional tournament.

The only question is whether it will be in Lorton or Chantilly.

Mathematically, the Stallions can leapfrog the Bruins for the third spot, but it would require a Lake Braddock loss to West Springfield, as well as losses by two of the following three teams: Langley, Westfield and Robinson.

Thank you, strength of schedule.

Woodson clinches the top seed with a win, but could fall as low as No. 3 with a loss and wins by Robinson and Lake Braddock.

On the field Friday, we’ll see the best executed offense in the region — yes, I said it — against the best coached defense.

Woodson had six different players score its six touchdowns last week — seven if you count senior quarterback Connor Reilly passing the ball in scoring plays. That effort came after Reilly completed 12-of-14 passes in a 44-31 win over West Springfield in Week 8.

He has averaged better than 7.8 yards per pass attempt in five of the last seven games.

The X-factor in this game, though, is how South County moves the ball. Again, sorry, the Stallions are 6-0 when averaging better than 3.0 yards per carry, 0-3 when they aren’t.

If South County is to secure its seventh win — an all-time best for the program — it has to move the ball on the ground, namely block Woodson senior linebacker Josh Hogan.

In the last three games, Hogan has 29 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, a fumble forced and three fumble recoveries. He also had a 21-yard touchdown reception while lined up at tight end last week.

The Stallions and Cavaliers have never met, but we can determine an advantage by who has watched games involving the teams.

South County is 2-0 in games I’ve attended this year. Woodson is 1-1.
